I've just stopped Microgynon...can anyone suggest which pill I should try next? At wit's end...

I have 2 lovely dd's and not wanting to get pregnant again. After using natural family planning/fertility awareness method for the last year I thought I would revisit the pill as DH (as well as me, actually) were really sick of condoms during my fertile time.

I tried Microgynon for two months and experienced significant weight gain and massive drop in libido - disaster all round.

Which pill should I ask to try next? I am short and slightly built, my usual weight is around 50kg I don't know if that is why microgynon affected me so greatly, maybe too much hormones for my body weight??

Any advice appreciated

I've always used copper coil and found it excellent - would you consider this?

3littlefrogs · 21/01/2009 16:45

I know it doesn't suit everyone, but the mirena coil was fantastic for me - I couldn't tolerate any sort of pill.

LaDiDaDi · 21/01/2009 16:48

I'm not convinced that your slight build is the reason for your problems with Microgynon, though I don't doubt that they were linked to the pill. I've taken that or Dianette or Cerazette for the past 15 years and I've never weighed more than 50kg, usually around 48kg, and I didn't have problems with the side effects that you describe.

AnnasBananas · 21/01/2009 17:27

LaDiDa, I remember taking Dianette too, a long time ago, it helped sort out my spotty skin when I was in my early 20's. I understand there are some 'new generation' pills something called Yasmin?? I haven't heard of Cerazette, is that new?

All my friends rave about Mirena so that is something I am seriously thinking about but I am a bit daunted about having a foreign object 'up there' but it might turn out work well for me. I need to get the courage up to try it I think.

I went from Microgynon to copper coil - would never go back!

2pt4kids · 21/01/2009 17:29

I gave up pill a while back and had the implant. Lasts 3 years so perfect if you arent planning any more.
Has been fine so far. Same sort of thing as pill but doesnt get messed up if you need to take anti b's!

ScoobyDoo · 21/01/2009 17:31

I was on Microgynon and gained weight, i am now on Yasmin and find it much better.

Ozziegirly · 23/01/2009 04:18

I'm on Yasmin - it's fantastic. Period lasts about 2 days, no cramps and is really light. Totally recommendation.

Ozziegirly · 23/01/2009 04:18

"totally recommendation" - eh?

I, of course meant - totally recommended.

Does the copper coil give you heavier/more painful periods? I remember reading that somewhere.

I tried 6 different pills pre dcs and had all sorts of horrible side effect from them. I've come to the conclusion that artificial hormones just do not agree with me.

I now have a copper coil which I love. I wouldn't use any other form of contraception now.

Femodene? I'm on that now and it seems to be fine.

I didn't get on with Micronor - no libido, very grumpy and hormonal, non-stop bleeding.

AnnasBananas · 23/01/2009 13:40

To those of you who chose the copper coil, why did you choose this over Mirena? Just wondering.

My periods are not painful but pretty heavy for 3-4 days then still hanging around until day 7 so I don't want to add to that, really. Less would be better!

I had bad experiences with pill so didn't want to use anything hormonal. Don't find copper coil makes periods worse although I've heard it can for some people
