having a Mirena inserted - is it grim?

have decided to have a Mirena coil and the nurse today was a bit doom-laden about how painful it might be.
she suggested I should get someone to drive me home and have someone to look after the children for the afternoon.
is it quite painful? what were your experiences?
TIA

Good no - didn't feel any pain whatsoever just the usual mild embarrassment about having someone's hand up my fanjo. Was after 2nd DD so things weren't exactly snapper-tight mind you.

Sparkletastic · 19/01/2009 22:08

Might have been a few mild cramps afterwards but nothing that a couple of ibuprofen didn't sort. Well worth it for putting a stop to very painful and heavy periods and saving a FORTUNE on tampons.

I found it quite painful but no one suggested I had paracetamol before I went for the appoinment (if only I knew about mn back then!!)
I had 2 sections so my cervix also wouldn't have stretched which I was told made things worse.
I would get someone to drive you but looking after the kids wasn't an issue

shootfromthehip · 19/01/2009 22:08

Not very painful at the time, a bit of cramping afterwards. Was utterly and unrepentantly mortified though . It has really agreed with me since though

harpsichordcarrier · 19/01/2009 22:08

it was the cramping she was referring to I think

yes it was painful and almost like labour pains for the rest of the day.
But sooooo worth it, best bloody thing ever, am missing mine desparately

lucyintheskywithdiamonds · 19/01/2009 22:09

I did find it quite uncomfortable but soooo worth it.

hmmm
I was thinking of just having it done in my lunch hour....

Having mine put in was not nice - as it was happening I was thinking (and even said) that it will make smears feel like nothing.

I do actually wish I had had someone to drive me back - I thought I was fine but had to pull over as I went all almost about to faint feeling and got all hot and cold. Had cramps the rest of the day and felt yucky.

But am really glad I had it done - had it put in in October and since then have had a tiny amount of bleeding

IdrisTheDragon · 19/01/2009 22:11

I wouldn't have wanted to have it done in my lunch hour tbh

mosschops30 · 19/01/2009 22:11

I would have botox in my lunch hour but not a mirena

Remotew · 19/01/2009 22:14

I found it painful. I drove home but wished I had got someone else to. I would take some paracetomol beforehand.

aGalChangedHerName · 19/01/2009 22:40

I had mine done today. I had to go to family planning clinic to have it done as the GP couldn't get it in as i have an awful lot of scar tissue from colposcopy treatment a few years ago.

It was slightly uncomfortable and twingey (sp) but mine was very difficult to insert so it wasn't that bad.

I have been CMing today as normal. I have been shopping and did the school run so i would say that it isn't that bad.

DH did drive me there and back. I am hoping desperately that it improves my periods tho!!

PinkFurryStripeyTiger · 19/01/2009 22:47

I'm having one fitted and GP said to take some paracetamol before hand and to make sure I had breakfast as it can make you feel a bit dizzy aferwards.

She also said it can be a bit more dificult to put in if your cerrvix has never fully dilated (like mine- I"ve had 3 cs) so hope it's not too bad!

JackBauer · 19/01/2009 22:58

Mine really hurt, so much so that dd1 (who was strapped in double buggy next to my head, no childcare, see!) said
'It's ok, mummy, you're very brave.'
and made the nurse PHSL.
Cramps like very bad period pain for rest of the day and driving was uncomfortable but not impossible.

However, the dr was rushing to get it done as I was last appt of the week and screwed it up so had to do it twice, which didn't help.

Rachmumoftwo · 19/01/2009 23:06

2 Neurofen before I went in and I was absolutely fine. I can be a bit of a wimp and was expecting it to be a lot worse.

cmotdibbler · 20/01/2009 08:40

I've had two - one pre any pg, and one post DS (vaginal birth) - first one I had quite a lot of cramps, second time nothing at all.

Had mine inserted at the FPC - funny thing was that the nurse tried to put me off both times, and both times the doctor thought that the Mirena was gods gift, and actually had them themselves
