Can you catch the Norovirus more than once?

I'm just asking as my youngest DD aged 4yrs has had a really bad month of it.
She was sick before xmas and recovered then just after New Year came down again with it and now tonight she has been throwing up.
So in the space of 3-4 weeks she has had 3 bouts of sickness.
The pre-school had to close for one day last week to deep clean, but kids are still dropping like flies.
Would it be wise to keep her away for next week and try and clear her system?

Does not help that DH was sick last night with it as well. DD1 and i still have not caught any of them....but its a matter of time and its making me nervous (hate being sick)

It's my understanding that once you've had a virus that automatically gives you immunity from catching it again, but I'm willing to stand corrected.

I'd certainly keep her off a few days if not a week. Trouble with pre-schools is they are full of germ spreading toddlers so everything gets passed around.

Oh no! don't tell me there's 3 noroviruses doing the rounds.

I think the immunity is imcomplete and it's only temporary. That means you can catch norovirus many times. Does she have sandwiches or school dinners? There is a theory that many outbreaks are caused by an infected person handling food. I also think that the Norovirus is like Cold virus, there is more than one type. Bleach is better at killing the virus than alcohol so using bleach to clean surfaces that have been may be infected is a good plan. Don't rely on alcohol gels for cleaning hands, use plenty of liquid soap and water.

You can get noro again, immunity only lasts so many weeks, but i don't think your DD has had the same virus in such a short space of time..maybe she has had different bugs? There are all sorts going round atm. Noro is caught mainly by touching things of an infected person or by being there when they actually v or d.

I feel for you, i really do. I am an emetophobe (phobic about v) and it is my biggest fear that myself or anyone in my family gets noro. I hate this time of year!

As smudge says bleach is the best thing for killing off noro germs. It does come around every year and even if you've had it the year before your immunity won't last so you can still get it the following year. It probably is very similar to the cold virus, taking many different forms. yuk! xx

I had it Boxing Day and did some research. Once you have had it you are immune to that strain for up to 14 weeks but there are several strains in existence so yes you can get it again within short space of time.

Thanks for all your replies. She's much better today! But i will keep her off pre-school for a few days though.

Glad your DD is feeling better but you are doing right to keep her away from pre-school for a few days as you need to address the 48hr rule. Hope you all survive it! x

You can catch these sorts of viruses more than once, your DD has been particularly unlucky and your DH has now caught it.

Think as well the preschool should close for more than one day too. Hospital wards are closed for far longer than just one day due to norovirus.

Oh help! I think i've got it now. Low growly pain deep in my stomach, eating does not stop it. I've got to go out this afternoon to take the car for an MOT, then pick up the kids....just hope i can last long enough!

Ripeberry - avoid dairy both now and if it does affect you after any attacks - makes it far worse apparently.
