Pain in back, any ideas?

Any know what this could be from? I have a pain in my back, sort of feels like it's behind my last rib if that makes any sense? It's radiating down into my lower back and I'm in agony.

Can't see GP until next sat . Help!!

? could be a kidney infection. Do you have any other symptoms? Need to wee more?

Hey Scrooged, thanks for the help. I have loads of other health problems which are unresolved at the minute; waiting for scans etc but I don't need to wee more, wee is normal colour, no pain when weeing. I've never had a kidney infection so not sure of symptoms, what you think?

I have tummy problems (GP thinks it's IBS - not been tested for it and don't think I have it. IBS is just a throwaway term to me, like "you have a 'virus'"). Where is the gallbladder, is it on the right side and would it cause pain in the back do you think? Only thing I can think is that it is related somehow but so far have only had abdominal pain so not sure!

Confused

Gallbladder is on the right side, under the rib. It can go into the back aswell. It normally causes pain after eating fatty food. Left side pain could be a number of causes. Any acid in your throat when you lie down?

My gall bladder pain is central, mainly in front, usually starts with my bra feeling far too tight. But it's different for everyone.
How long have you had it?

winterblues · 17/01/2009 22:52

Is there no way you can see an emergency gp or get an emergency appointment? Kidney infections can be agony if that is what it is. But at the very least you could get some painkillers.

Just realised your OP was hours ago - hope you're okay.

Hey everyone thanks for the concern and advice - I'm still here and still in agony. It seems worse if I lie down so can't get of to sleep at the min.

Hmm scrooged I did have a bacon sarnie this morning - grilled bacon though on rye bread. Would that be enough to set it off if it is my gallbladder?

nontoxic I've had this pain on and off since the 5th October - it normally goes after a few hours but has been hurting today since around 2pm. Have asked DR about it before as at first it was at front of rib - he said it was muscular from vomiting all the time. I asked him about it again about 6 weeks ago as it also hurts at the bag and he again looked at it and said it was muscular. But it's never hurt this much or for this long before so am a bit worried!

winterblues you'd think so wouldn't you? It's not an emergency - if I start to vomit blood or notice blood in my stool, then I can call them back . I've taken pain killers but try not to take too many as I may have a stomach ulcer and pain killers aggravate ulcers apparently. So just using a hot water bottle at the minute which isn't doing anything!

I hope you got some sleep. It strikes me that if you've been in pain for hours to the extent that you can't sleep, that IS an emergency.

If you get through today, you could ask your gp to refer you for a scan to check for gall stones.

I must say, I could now eat a bacon sarnie with no ill- effects, but I remember having one of my first attacks after a bowl of homemade soup with bread and butter.

For me, stress seems to aggravate the attacks - and it does sound as if you're under stress.

Don't let your gp fob you off - a mother to little ones should be able to look after them, and it's his job to see you're in good health.
