Coil, heavy periods and mooncup

Morning all! what better way to start the weekend than by reading a lovely thread on menstruation, with plenty of TMI to keep you hooked!

So I hope you will read on and offer me some wisdom...

I had the copper coil fitted 6 weeks ago. Had been warned that periods would be heavy but tbh I wasn't quite expecting the (literal) bloodbath that has materialised! First period was ok-ish, but this one is just really really heavy! Will it settle down? because otherwise I am not sure I can cope with such heavy periods, I need to change every hour or two through day and night...

I have also started using the mooncup and I just can't get the hang of it- it leaks like crazy, am having to wear a pad as well and empty mooncup plus change the pad every couple of hours (sorry i am repeating myself). i think i just can't get it to suction properly, sometimes i can actually hear and feel the "pop" and i seem to be having lots of fanny farts (i told you it was TMI!).

Am i doing something wrong? Is my fanjo too big/pelvic floor too weak to hold it in properly?

I really want to love it but i need it not to leak quite this bad...

thanks!

Why copper coil not lovely Mirena - no periods at all, or very light ones?

Coils I had before Mirena (ie 15+ years ago) used to approx double weight of periods - so I started light and got heavy.

No experience of Mooncup, sorry.

hi

i went for copper coil rather then minevera as i didn; want the hormones.

my first few periods were heavier but they settled down a bit - still heavier than before but copable. They are over quicker too.

I use a mooncup - this too takes a bit of getting used to. I think having both of these things new at the same time must be confusing (what's causing what etc.) the mooncup takes a good few cycles to 'get' as well. I have found that emptying more regularly on heavy days solves it.

I also get les pain with the mooncup which was a worry with the coil.

Basically, they both take a while to get in your stride as it were. You could go back to alternative sanitary protection until the coil has settled a little - but please don;t give up on the mooncup as it really is amazing.

I have copper coil; also didn't fancy extra hormones.

Clinic siad it would take 3-4 months for the heavy periods to settle, in fact it was 7-8 months.

HIya im with bbbe I also have a mooncup and it took me quite a while to get the hang of it properly. I now love it to bits and will never ever go back to anything else. I did find that at 1st I was placing mine too high it really does need to sit low to make a proper seal - I cut the "stem" off almost completely. I am not saying this would work for you only that it does take time to get used to. Hang in there, don't give up on the moon cup!

I think the coil and the Mooncup could be an iffy combination.
I have had several customers contact me bcause their coil has been literally sucked out by the Mooncup. The suction power is quite strong and if you just yank it out you may cause problems.
My advice would be to release the suction before pulling it out, or give sponges a go?
Good Luck!

thanks everyone for your advice. Coil sucked off by the mooncup??/ OMG! i really hope it doesnt happen.... tbh given that i am struggling to achieve good suction i dont think it is an imminent risk.

after two days of really heavy flow things have settled down and the mooncup is working beautifully. i just wished it worked better when i really need it! but am going to persevere....

I have a copper coil and a mooncup too. My periods are a bit heavier for about a day, then back to normal.

I think the coil can take a bit of time to settle down. I think they're great! I'm still trying to get used to the mooncup, but leaky tampons are far worse

singyswife · 18/01/2009 15:37

I use a Mooncup but what are sponges????

The mooncup takes a while to get used to but It is fab once you are used to it.

FeminineWear · 18/01/2009 17:18

Washable sea sponges, you use them like tampons. But you just rinse them out and pop them back, like the Mooncup. They last up to a year.

Indith · 18/01/2009 17:34

My coil came out while I was emptying my mooncup.

hi, i used the mooncup for a few months before they fitted the coil in. i consider myself somebody who can take pain quite well, but it was really really painful to get it in and the periods after were horrendously painful. i stop having sex all together, the idea of my partner even arousing me gave the fear..... i wasn't happy, and thinking to get it taken out.

i didn't use the mooncup on my first period after the fitting as advised. but i used on the second one. one time distractedly pulled the cup out without breaking the vacuum seal and i felt an intense pain. next morning my coil was swimming at the bottom of the toilet. maybe for the best, because i hated it.

whether the coils wasn't propperly inserted or it was too early to use the mooncup, i don't know, but i called the doctor after and she said that i should NEVER use tampons or mooncup if i wanted another coil. i know other people who's experience is different and i think that a properly fitted coil with the sensible use of the mooncup after a few cycles is possible.

nevertheless, i have no coil now and i still use the mooncup. periods are ok and i happily have sex again, if i need other contraception methods

hope it helps

:)
