Please reassure me that I just have lumpy breasts!

I found a pea sized lump on my left breast last night, and went to the gp today for a breast clinic referral.

Nearly two years ago I had the same experience, had an ultrasound and biopsy and everything was fine. In fact I went for the ultrasound for a lump in my left, which was nothing, and ultrasound picked up one in my right which was the one they checked out.

GP says it's probably nothing to worry about, well he'd probably say that anyway wouldn't he?

My mum had similar experiences at my age, had several scares, but lumps all turned out to be benign.

I'll be a couple of weeks waiting for the referral, but in the meantime am trying to convince myself that I'm just prone to innocent lumps

I think some people do just get lumpy breasts - and your family history backs that up. And the majority of lumps are harmless.

But you're doing the right thing by getting it checked out - I know it's very easy for me to say and much harder to do, but try not to fret.

Thanks Hassled, I find it easy enough to stay positive during the day, by my imagination runs wild in the middle of the night

Actually I think most GPs are honest with patients. I know it's very easy for me to say this but I think if he says it's probably nothing to worry about then I suspect it really probably isn't. If you see what I mean!

When I was younger I had this. I was petrified and went to the docs on several occasions. From her point of view, she was obvioulsy aware that these weren't cancerous lumps, but she examined me on a regular basis, drew diagrams to note where the lumps were and if they had changed in any way. She put my mind at rest through her patience and kindness. I have faith that she would have treated me if she had felt that there was a problem, obviously there wasn't as this was 20 years ago.

People that have benign lumps are prone to more and often have a history of "lumpy breasts" so try not to worry.

However, it doesn't mean you should leave a new lump or not get it checked out properly....just accept this may happen from time to time......
