Brother and sister at school have scarlet fever (girl is dd's good friend). I have been invited for a drink at one parents house and the mother of the scarlet fever children is going. I am 10 weeks pg. Would you go?

It is highly contagious I believe and she is having to wash all the bedding and disinfect the house on a daily basis. I am obviously bothered about catching the virus, but I am equally bothered about having to contend with all that palaver too- I really can't be arsed .

So, I ask again, would you go?

Anyone?

ooh....my DD3 had scarlet fever when I was pregnant with DS2. docs didn;t seem overly concerned, but then, too late I guess seeing as it wasn;t exactly optional to just not see her.

if it helps, no-one else caught it from her, altho DD2 did get tonsilitis at the same time, and both are caused by the strep virus IIRC.

if they are on antibiotics tho, and the mum has cleaned everything, I would think the infectious stage is over. have you tried googling it to see if anything is said anywhere??

My son had scarlet fever when I was about 6 or 7 months pregnant and the doctor's weren't concerned.

I wouldn't worry about it, if she's not sick you won't catch it from her. It's just strep with a nasty kick.

Ack - errant apostrophe, eek.

suwoo · 16/01/2009 11:57

I think if I'm honest, I'm more concerned about the cleaning than the illness!

Both DC's are just getting over chicken pox and I can't cope with any more. Also if I'm off work I don't get paid as SE. I really, really don't want to get this!

just out of interest, has she been told& to wash the bedding, or is she just doing it as she is worried about the contagiousness, as I wasn;t advised to, and nor did they do it in hospital (DD3 was admitted with hers as she was very poorly and dehydrated).

I have never heard this with any illness. just with headlice/worms/scabies etc.

suwoo · 16/01/2009 12:09

This is what the GP told her.

hmm.......well, tis either an 'old-school' GP and handing outdated advice, or it is the right advice and she is following it a little too much to the letter, as surely daily disinfecting is a little OTT.

not advice I have ever been given tho, and like I say, no-one else caught it in our family so it isn;t as tho it is to stop infection spreading....that would spread regardless of washing in a normal household.

Preventing Scarlet Fever
"The bacterial infection that causes scarlet fever is contagious. A child who has scarlet fever can spread the bacteria to others through nasal and throat fluids by sneezing and coughing. If a child has a skin infection caused by strep bacteria, like impetigo, it can be passed through contact with the skin.

In everyday life, there is no perfect way to avoid the infections that cause scarlet fever. When a child is sick at home, it's always safest to keep that child's drinking glasses and eating utensils separate from those of other family members, and to wash these items thoroughly in hot soapy water. Wash your own hands frequently as you care for a child with a strep infection."

INFO LIFTED FROM HERE

it doesn;t say anything about the bedding, just about the communal stuff, which is commen sense anyway.

hope this helps

"There is no evidence to suggest that catching scarlet fever when you are pregnant will put your baby at risk."

and this was lifted from here

suwoo · 16/01/2009 12:20

Cheers. Shall I go then? I think I will hold you responsible psychomum if I catch it .

how long have they had it??

assuming they are on antibiotics, and that you are not planning on cuddling them closely or sharing their drinks etc....

so....

if it were me, then yes, I would go.
