Anyone tried acupuncture for fibroids?

I've had them in the past, and had surgery. Now I'm sure they're back again, and would like to pursue alternative options - IMO acupuncture is the only one I'd really go for as herbal medicine (which I tried before) took ages and didn't really change the fibroids themselves.

Anyone?

no experience matey but it could be very good! I have used reflexology to excellent effect on "wimmin's troubles" before now, but acupuncture would probably work faster. you could also try cranial-sacral osteopathy to release whatever the energetic issue is in your uterus that is causing the fibroids...
sorry if I sound too "out there"!

MrsGrouchoMarxMerryHenry · 16/01/2009 00:21

No, not out there at all (well, maybe be just a tad on the cranio-sacral stuff...!)

I'm thinking of asking my GP to stump up the cost of it (have an appointment tomorrow) and so am doing some research - there's currently a study into its effectiveness, which the NHS appears to be monitoring, but it's happening in bloody China and bloody NZ!! What good is that to me? I want to be a research monkey!

i could do a literature search for you but you wouldn't get the info in time for tomorrow.
anyway, can you just ask your GP to pay for stuff?

MrsGrouchoMarxMerryHenry · 16/01/2009 00:25

Well, I'd like to ask for a referral to a hospital that is open-minded about these things; I think that's the way to do it.

A literature search would be really useful, though thanks - I'd really appreciate it. I just can't bear the thought of a second operation just so that I can have another DC.

best of luck with that then! Unless you have a GP who has done his 4 weekends training in acupuncture (as opposed to the 4 years it takes acupuncturists) - he might like to use you as a guineapig himself! (or should that be hedgehog?)

Cranio-sacral osteopathy has done wonders for a couple of my clients with wimmin's issues - actually, one of them did have fibroids and it helped her a lot - it's not just for wee babies! (helped DS massively too)

MrsGrouchoMarxMerryHenry · 16/01/2009 00:31

4 weekends' training? Is that what's required of forward-thinking GPs? I'm hoping mine will be open-minded as she's Asian (i.e. born in Asia, though not Far East) so hopefully has a broader perspective than a pure Westerner.

I'd like to do my acupuncture training, especially for women's health issues.
I think i have to do 80 hours of training to do it.

anyway, how hard can it be?

thumbwitch · 16/01/2009 00:34

I think it was 4 weekends, might have been 8 - but considerably much less than real acupuncturists! Considering that real acupuncturists have much more practice in knowing where to stick their needles, and most GPs baulk at taking blood, I know which I'd choose!!

DragonLowFatSpread · 16/01/2009 00:35

i think the 4 weekends training is usually spaced out. the time inbetween is used for practise and research etc.

MrsGrouchoMarxMerryHenry · 16/01/2009 00:43

Dragon, I'm sure if you practise on your DC's dollies it will be just as good as four weekends! But is that training meant to actually enable you to do acupuncture? Somehow it would make more sense as a way to help you understand it but not practise (I'm with thumbwitch on that one!).

you wait until you have to practise finding RN1, Dragon!

DragonLowFatSpread · 16/01/2009 00:46

I am a qualified physio though.
Must count for something?

i'll voodoo the power rangers to practise.
no dollies here

thumbwitch · 16/01/2009 00:47

Dragon, if you are allowed to practise at all after the 1st weekend, that is pretty horrifying, unless it is only on yourself or a fellow student (or a willing mug OH!)

DragonLowFatSpread · 16/01/2009 00:47

ooh RN1 sounds like fun!

MrsGrouchoMarxMerryHenry · 16/01/2009 00:47

ROFL. Is it true that we can now ask to be referred to any hospital of our choosing?

OP posts:
DragonLowFatSpread · 16/01/2009 00:49

yes but you can't come to my unit unless you have dementia.

MrsGrouchoMarxMerryHenry · 16/01/2009 01:06

Have you not seen my earlier post on Beyonce? Is that not proof enough? .

Must be a challenging unit to work on, Dragon.

DragonLowFatSpread · 16/01/2009 18:16

which earlier post?
are you obsessed with beyonce?

the work is very interesting and varied and heartwarming and sad. i love it.

MrsGrouchoMarxMerryHenry · 16/01/2009 18:18

You cheeky monkey! I meant on the other thread, where you mentioned beyonce!
