First immunisations and now sleeping a lot

Just looking for reassurance really. Eight week old had first immunisations today and at first slept a bit, then screamed the house down and had big swollen thigh, she then filled her nappy to overflowing and after changing continued screaming until she threw up over me then suddenly fell asleep. Took her back to docs who said that the injection had gone into muscle which sometimes happens and should be fine. Since then she's slept for about four hours, fed briefly then asleep again for another couple. Is lots of sleeping normal after injections - she's alert when she wakes - but not for long.

Boths my DS's slept a lot after their jabs, and also did the "Nappy From Hell" thing too.

My ds slept all day after his first jabs. He was really quite out of it. As long as she's alert when awake, isn't floppy/rigid, her eyes aren't rolling around and temp isn't too high, she should be fine, but if your still concerned, you could always call NHS direct, see what they say

Thanks - she just woke up again and gave me a big smile so I think she's back to her normal self again . The doc said give her Calpol before she sleeps tonight as a just in case for fever - but she's not been hot - what do you think? He's an ok doc but he is very very quick with the scripts sometimes.

They always say that. I give ds a shot of calpol about an hour before injections too. If she's ok and doesn't have a temp, she's prob fine, but her leg might be aching a bit. Personally I'd give the calpol, won't hurt, immunisation days are tough and there may or may not be an ache there, it's not like you're giving medication freely. If she's not showing signs of distress then you could prob leave it, up to you really

NimChimpsky · 15/01/2009 23:34

Perhaps hold off on the Calpol. I don't like it used as a preventative measure anyway and if the temp spikes 2hrs post Calpol you then can't give more iyswim.

littleboyblue · 15/01/2009 23:37

With a temp, I normally find ibuprofen works quicker anyway and you can give calpol and ibuprofen at 2 hour intervals if need be, but agree, shouldn't be used as prevention as a general rule, but if her leg is still swollen it might be a bit sore

NimChimpsky · 15/01/2009 23:44

Don't use ibuprofen under 12 weeks OP. Ibuprofen from 3 months only, only at 6 hourly interval and only 2 doses in 24hrs. Is better at reducing a temp though ime but calpol only if anything at 8wks.

Whoops, sorry!

Thanks to everyone - she's now snoring without the aid of anything yet - finger's crossed
