Wondered if I could get some advice.

I have just found a lump, its right at the top of my leg (in the crease, in you know what I mean) it is about an inch long and 1/4 in thick. I have looked and the top is a bit red, but its not a spot or a boil. I have booked a doctors appointment, but it is not until monday, I do not want to worry myself if this may be something silly. Any advice/ideas?

Bouncy,
Is it sore or tender ? Have you thought of a trapped hair follicle ? That would be my immediate thought ?
All these things are really worrying aren't they ?
Hope all's well

bouncy · 25/03/2003 21:36

It is a little bit tender, but probably because since I noticed it I keep touching it.

I am getting myself into a state really. I know I am probably being silly.

Bouncy -- do you mean a lump in your groin? Aren't there lymph nodes there? Don't lymph nodes swell up in response to all sorts of things? Definitely worth checking with a GP, but I think very very high odds your lump is completely benign.

bouncy · 25/03/2003 21:45

Its at the very top of my leg, just under the public hairs.

What a time to do a typo

Bouncy,

Have you had a very bad cold or anything lately?

Alot of lumps and bumps can come up then (I didn't know until I saw the docs).

I know it's easier said than done but try not to worry till you have seen your doctor

bouncy · 25/03/2003 21:50

No, no cold or anything. I just finished my period 3 days ago.

It could be a swollen sweat gland - I got one of those under my arm, and saw the doctor about it - he said it would just go away and it did. Try not to worry - I got in a real state, but it was ok.

musica · 25/03/2003 22:39

Sebaceous (sp?) cyst is what the doctor said.

Dear Bouncy

This sounds like a lymph node, is it under the skin and moveable or within the skin IYKWIM? I would imagine it would be gone by the time you see the GP, but sometimes they can remain raised for weeks. Please don't worry.

Bouncy - I've not really got any further ideas than the ones already posted, except to say most lumps turn out to be nothing serious.
I just wanted to say I think it's terrible that you can't get an appointment until Monday, can't you ring your doctors and tell them you need something sooner? I know I wouldn't want to spend the rest of the week and the whole weekend worrying about it!!

Bouncy, the other, non-serious (but needs to be checked out) thing it might be, is a small hernia. Women of childbearing age can sometimes get them in that location.
Like musica, I had a sebaceous cyst, convinced myself it was a swollen gland and therefore really serious. Because it had got slightly infected, with some Fucidin prescribed by the docs it went away in about 24 hours. Otherwise they clear up by themselves.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.

I get these at the top of my leg and also in my neck 4 times a year or so. I have never done anything about it as they always go down within a week or so and I have assumed it is a swollen gland. My brother has non-Hodgkin's lymphona though which has made me wonder whether I should in fact see a Doctor.

JJ · 26/03/2003 17:32

Bouncy, my lymph nodes swell sometimes, but usually don't hurt. I did have an infected lymph node in my neck last year which hurt; it kept growing in size and also began to hurt more and more. Antibiotics by mouth took care of it quickly. Hope it's as easy for you.

Bouncy - I had a lump on my shoulder a few years ago, similar to the one you described, it turned out to be 'fatty tissue' - I did have it removed purely for cosmetic reasons (& only because at the time I had private health cover through work) - it was absolutely nothing to worry about.

bouncy · 29/03/2003 09:16

Well Clucks you were right, it has now gone and my appointment is Monday afternoon, should I cancel it as it has now gone. I mentioned this to my mum who said she had one there years ago and the doctor didn't even look at it and said they are common, come back in a few weeks if still there. It wasn't.

Hi i too have a lump on the top of my leg. Only noticed it a day ago and it has gotten a bit bigger since I first noticed it. It has also become tender and a bit painful to walk and sit down. Ive had one of these on my armpit before and I had to go hospital to get it drained. So I am assuming its the same thing. Ive put vapour rub on it n its calmed down the pain a bit as it has heated it up. Is vapour rub ok to put on it? And would it go away in a week or so? Don't really wanna go doctors because they'l just tell me to go drain it but its is really painful so I'm wondering if I leave it for a week or so would it get better?
