cooled and boiled salty water to rinse over the tooth, or an antiseptic mouthwash.
Hot water bottle for your face.
Anti-inflammatories 1st then the co codamol later.

Been in pain with my teeth too often!

bellavita · 10/01/2009 22:36

Yes, oil of cloves.

You can buy it over the counter at any pharmacy - costs under £1.

Just dip a cotton bud into it then put it on the affected area - it is anaesthetic which the dentists use. Just keep putting it on as and when.

Someone suggested it to me a few weeks back - I had to wait a few days for an emergency appointment at my dentist and was in agony.

It stinks to high heaven, but worth it.

This happened to me a couple of weeks ago, just after Christmas when my dentist was on holiday.

The pain was unbearable, you have all my sympathy.

Dentist told me to take the following until I could see her: Nurofen is the best painkiller as it's anti-inflammatory, I got an anaesthetic mouthwash called Diflamm, which gave me some relief, and Augmentin Duo to kill the infection.

Got the tooth taken out last week, what a relief.

HTH

hunnybun1981 · 10/01/2009 22:47

macherie thank you i think my mum gave me some of that mouth wash and few weeks ago for a throat problem, and i have just realised that my hubby is away to work in the car and the wash is in the boot.

the augmentin duo is that on prescription?

i think i might have to get this taken out or a root filling i havent been to dentist in 3 years since i was preggers hence we got it free

thanks

Yes, it's a prescription anti-biotic, my friendly local pharmacist gave me some then I'd been to the dentist. I'm in Ireland though, you might have stricter rules in the UK.

I hate going to the dentist, and paying the bill afterwards, but getting the tooth out was a doddle, the only uncomfortable part was the injection for the anaesthetic.

Is there no way you could get to an emergency clinic before tuesday night?

katch · 10/01/2009 23:02

I'd really try and sort it asap - there's nothing worse than climbing the walls with toothache. I'd pay what it takes for the DCs to have a happy mum.

macherie · 10/01/2009 23:02

That should be, the pharmacist gave me the medicine, then I brought him the prescription after I'd been to the dentist

hunnybun1981 · 11/01/2009 08:26

if i go to the dentist before hand it could cost me 150 quid and if i had it i would go but i dont

our hospitals in northern ireland do dentist clinics for people that dont have dentists or if it is out of hours.

tuesday is the soonest i can go, although i had a hell of a night last nite am shattered

Blimey, poor you

DON'T take antibiotics unless they are prescribed for THIS infection.

They are probably doing nothing and could even make it worse. they have to be the right ones and there are loads of different types.

It's daft to take some old ones you found as they might just kill off the wrong bacteria.

Please try and get to the emergency dentist, you could lose the tooth if you leave it too long. xx

HelenBurns · 11/01/2009 08:31

Which ones have you taken?
I know a bit about the different ones.

Augmentin is serious stuff - you could never get it without prescription, and it can have terrible side effects too.

Don't mess with anti b's...might be quite dangerous.

Cuprofen or any type of ibuprofen stuff is excellent. I had this last week. Cuprofen was a godsend.

hunnybun1981 · 11/01/2009 20:51

i went to hospital emergency dentist they took one look and it said there is infection and needs taken out !!!

they wont take it out but they gave me some more antibiotic amoxicillan and told me to get the brufen which i av

need to find a dentist that will take it out for me but its 3rd in from th back so when it is taken out i will be able to see it when i smile, will i get a bridge or sumthing?

OP posts:
katch · 11/01/2009 21:22

I'm afraid the bridge will come as a separate treatment and you'll probably have to pay.

I had the same tooth out when pg as the dentist said I might as well while it was free, the tooth being dead and root-filled already. It was only when I went back to discuss a bridge that I realised this wasn't included in the free treatment for pg patients (at least not at that dentist's).

It was a good few years before I could pay for it to be done.

But don't let that stop you going - an abscess is agony and it could spread to your jaw if you don't get the tooth removed and drained.

hunnybun1981 · 11/01/2009 21:55

thanks katch

i thought by now that the pain would have eased a good bit but it hasnt

antibiotics and brufen and off to bed for me i think.

i havent had it root filled so maybe they could offer that but the dentist at hospital just said it needs out

OP posts:
katch · 11/01/2009 22:20

If it's an abscess they might drain and fill it, so you wouldn't need an extraction - fingers crossed; but I hope you get yourself seen to - and by that I mean TREATED - tomorrow.

macherie · 12/01/2009 21:35

How are you doing honeybun?

I had an abscess, it was so sore, I had 6 doses of antibiotic before the pain eased.

If it's a tooth that can be seen, ask the dentist can they not do a root canal rather than take it out.

Really hope you are feeling better by now.
