He is ongsighted and teh optician says he needs to wear them at all times.
Will they stay on when he is running around at playtime?
Will the break all the time/ and get lost?
Wil the other kids make fun of him?
I am so glad he has them as he ahs been struggling at school with reading and writing , so am hoping this will help.

hope he likes them. Has he chosen them himself? (wondered how old he is?)
get a spare pair (erm whatever they'll let you have)
Make sure he knows Harry Potter and all Good Wizards wear glasses

How old is he? I think you can get deals or insurance or something so you can get broken glasses replaced free or at minimal cost. Because children DO break glasses. Often. Make sure you get a spare pair, as well!

I joined the speccy four eyes club when I was seven and was never teased about it. But then, I was jolly pleased because my mother wore glasses and at that age I still wanted to be just like her!

how old is he? i think you'll just have to get several pairs.

does he really need to wear them all the time, is it lazy eye thing? will he be out of specs at some point?

why would other kids make fun? how would they be allowed to get away with it?

hester · 08/01/2009 22:23

I wore them from the age of four, and hated it. But I am assured by other parents that it is much easier these days - glasses are lighter and less ugly, and more kids wear them.

You can get them with bendy arms that hold them snug to the ear, so they shouldn't fall off. You can also get virtually unbreakable ones that can be bent back into shape. Above all, you can get insurance - well worth it, I would think!

I'm sure he'll be fine

Try if possible to go somewhere like Vision Express (I'm sure others do it, but we go here) where you get a second pair free. This is really useful!

I think it's important for him to choose the glasses & be happy with them. DD has a really funky pair at the moment which she loves. She's only been mildly teased & that was by a girl who isn't that nice & was teasing her about other stuff as well. Most people comment on how nice her glasses are.

I know some twins the same age as DD who were terrible at wearing them - throwing them over walls & into bushes but never had a problem with DD. I think she realises that they are a help not a hinderance.

\he is 5 and chose some cool blue ones.
He is really chuffed about it.
Was told that if he wears them all the time will even out the imbalance in his eyes, his right is worse than the left?
Am baffled by it all really!

my dd has had them since about 18 months (now 5yrs). She has never been teased although some kids have asked why she has them and she tells them it is so she can see better. She has been good with them but has had a few replacements. You can get some lovely free frames and I have only had to pay extra to get her lenses thinned as she has quite a high prescription.

how did you notice eye probs laptop?

just that this is same thing as i have (and my dad) and i can see that ds (3) also has wandering eye when tired. what age to start with opticians?

edam · 09/01/2009 08:48

now, fishie. Go and see the optician if you think there's a problem.

Seona1973 · 09/01/2009 12:40

When I noticed dd squinting at around 18 months I took her to the hv and she referred us to the orthoptist at the hospital and all her appointments are there now. Not all opticians deal with children so you might be best phoning and asking before you go. She has had glasses since just over 18 months as she is long sighted in both eyes. She also had the operation to correct the squint in her left eye as it was still noticeable even with the glasses on. She is now 5.

i didnt really notice his eyes as the prob as me and DH have good eyesight, but wanted to rule it out , thinking he was dyslexic.
So glad we went.
