Coil strings gone AWOL - how do they get the thing out?

I just had a scan today as my coil strings have disappeard (cue pregnancy panic). So the coil is still there, in the right place but I am having horrible heavy periods and seem to get bacterial vaginosis every month and I want rid of the coil. Anyone else had this? how do they get it out (already crossing legs at the thought)?

They may use a coil retriever. It is done at an outpatient appointment. They will put in a speculum (like when you have a smear) and just use the retriever. Have seen loads of these done, and it just takes a few minutes.

Hope this helps. Mostly the strings have plastered themselves to the side of your cervix and turned back on themselves. Our docs have no more trouble getting coils out when strings are not visible then when they are visible. Hope this relieves your mind a bit.

I did not like gas and air, maybe I can try singing loudly like I did through both my labours?

Most of the ladies I help with coil removal do not even realise when we have done it.

2pt4kids · 09/01/2009 13:13

it usually comes out on the baby's head

I had it removed without G&A.

Yes, it was bloody uncomfortable - first they tried to "brush" it down with a cotton swab, then they went for a hooky grabby device.

I took strong pain killers before I went in, and then was just v bad period pains for rest of the day.
