Undescended testicle at 8 months, what are the chances it will descend on it;'s own?

PHN ( That's Irish for HV!) and GP have both agreed ds4 has an undescended testicle and I am seeing a paed next month. Anyone had this rectify itself at this age?

I don't think it will rectify itself now.

When the testicle is formed it is located in the abdomen. In most boys it comes down into the scrotum by birth. Even after birth some testicles will still come down to the normal position in the scrotum (most of these come down by 4 months of age). If a testicle is not in the scrotum by 6 months of age, it is unlikely that it will come down. This testicle is called an undescended testicle. If the testicle can't be felt at all, it is called a "cryptorchid testicle." An undescended testicle requires surgery, called "orchidopexy," to place it in the scrotum.

In view of the above you are wise to be seeing the paed next month. My brother had an undescended testicle op at 8 years of age; the op was fine but the overall experience of being in hospital was a bit strange for him. Better to get the surgery done asap.

Thanks, Attila, I had thought as much. My GP would have seen him again in 2 months but I had a feeling I should make that appointment!

DS had this - didn't know till he was 3 though. He had the op in Temple Street. Twas all fine.

chipmonkey · 08/01/2009 13:47

Hi Buda! Is it day-case surgery or do they have to say overnight?

It was day surgery!

Buda · 08/01/2009 13:55

We went in for 7.30 I think. Only issue was that he ended up last on list - the younger ones were all done first. He was starving by 11 - took him to the loo and he tried to drink the water from washing his hands! So I went to nurse and said if not done next we were going and would expect to be first on list next day! Not fair really I know but I felt so sorry for him. He was done next and it was all fine. Ate a huge bowl of cocopops and had 7-up after he woke up - he still talks about that bit!

Well, that doesn't sound too bad. It sounds like when ds1 and ds2 had grommets, we were out by the afternoon. Can't say I'm a huge fan of that day-ward though! I remember ds2 wandering around in a hospital gown that came down to his ankles and loads of people saying how lovely "she" was!

ds had to sat in overnight both times, and do warn your dh/dp the bruising is horrid(dh was shocked)

Buda · 08/01/2009 14:27

DS didn't have any bruising that I recall 2shoes.

I did laugh when his nursery teacher told me that he proudly tried to show her his scars!!!!

chipmonkey · 08/01/2009 15:05

Oh yes I forgot about that, he'll have to have time off nursery, won't he?

Well DS did but I can't remember how long - compounded by the fact that we are in Budapest and op done in Dublin. (Docs here wanted to try hormone injections first to see if would bring down.) I think we went home for a week.

sagacious · 08/01/2009 15:58

ds had his done at 23 months.

IIRC consultant said if they haven't dropped by a year its very unlikely.

Operation at 9am out and in recovery in about 45 mins ..took slightly longer as the left side was totally undecended and the right couldn;t make its mind up and they wanted to check it but didn't operate on it( so it felt like years) but he was happy and eating a ham sandwich at 1pm and back home by 3pm.

No bruising, just had to be carefull for a couple of days, seem to remember no bubble bath allowed (we put a couple of drops of tea tree oil and lavender oil in with the water to aid healing.

My ds had the operation at 13 months and was absolutely fine. Only had a couple of days off nursery I think. I was most worried about the anaesthetic, but again absolutely fine. In fact, the worst bit was when we went back for his outpatient appointment and he tripped over and nearly broke his nose and we ended up in A&E. But I don't think that can be testicle related!!

dippica · 09/01/2009 13:48

Both my Ds's had this corrected when little. Ops went fine (apart from me blubbing my way out of the anaesthetic room, twice - have done it twice more since the too!)A bit of bruising, and a few days of nursery. Now aged 8 and 7 and no scars to be found at all, unless you really really search for them.
