Any tips for improving "well-being" after huge dose of antibiotics? (Sore tummy/thrush)

Hello.

Have just had major chest infection and kidney infection whilst 12 weeks pregnant which ended up in me being admitted to hospital. So, in the last 17 days I have had:

1 x 7 day course of maximum dose Amoxicillin
2 day break
1 x 2 day course of Augmentin(?) by IV
then, after being discharged,
1 x 7 day course of Amoxicillin
1 x 7 day course of Co-Amoxiclav
1 x 7 day course of Erithromycin

My tummy feels absolutely shot to pieces with the obligatory diorrhea and also have terrible thrush. Obviously being pregnant limits what I can do about these - the thrush in particular.

Does anyone have any pregnancy-friendly tips for getting me back on my feet? Am already eating/drinking live yoghurt like it's going out of fashion and using external cream for thrush but having felt so ill for so long these ongoing symptoms are really starting to get me down.....

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

interesting article on radio 4 this week indicating that probiotics do work - actimel in particular was used in clinical trials and appeared to prevent stomach infections following antibiotics.

Live natural yoghurt

I would take some probiotic capsules from the health food shop. Check if you can have them but I'm sure you can.

If thrush is persistent you could try cutting out refined sugar and fermented foods, yeasts, marmite and so on, with the exception of cider vinegar. If you can stomach it it's meant to be good for fungal things. Have a bit in some juice.

you poor old soul! guad has good advice

i personally believe you can use the internal pessaries for thrush while pg - you just need to be extra careful while inserting them

thank you all. some good suggestions there - will get on the case tomorrow as I really do need to get better sooner rather than later...

I usually get our probiotics from here:

www.protexin.com/health-care/

they currently run a buy 3 get 1 free promotion.

Vitamin B and C high strength works for me, advised by gp because basically ab's wreck my digestive system.
Had also wondered about the little yogurty-drink thingys, and others are saying the same
Hope you feel better soon

gigglewitch · 08/01/2009 01:11

ps vit B&C alone safe during pg afaik

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 08/01/2009 08:42

You can use internal pessaries whilst pg. I would also cut out sugar and yeast from your diet. Wash all of your knickers, towels and bedding at a high temperature.

I would do all of these as a 3 pronged attack as I dount each one on their own would work.

Good luck and I hope you start to feel better soon

May sound vile, but the garlic thing does work:
Garlic protocol:

? Break a clove off of a bulb of garlic and peel off the paper-like cover. Cut in half. Sew a string thru it for easy retrieval.

? Put a fresh half in your vagina in the evening before you go to sleep. Most women taste garlic in their mouths as soon as it is in their vagina, so it is less pleasant to treat while awake.

? In the morning, the garlic may come out when you poop. If not, many women find it is easiest to take it out on the toilet. Circle the vagina with a finger, till you find it. It cannot enter the uterus through the cervix. It cannot get lost, but it can get pushed into the pocket between the cervix and the vaginal wall.

? Most people will taste the garlic as long as it is in there. So if you still taste it, it is probably still in there. Most women have trouble getting it out the first time.

? For easy retrieval, sew a string through the middle of the clove before you put it in. You don't want to get irritated. Be gentle. Don't scratch yourself with long nails.

Thank you all for the suggestions.

The thrush is driving me mad so I may well resort to the garlic method tonight - had heard about it in vague terms before but thanks for the proper instructions Turtle as I feel a bit more confident about trying it now! Although it does indeed sound vile.....but, needs must.....

Thanks again everyone.

You poor thing. Sounds vile.

A hospital I was in last year gave 2 yakults a day to everyone on ABs.

scampadoodle · 08/01/2009 20:16

I developed IBS after taking ABs for PID (too many acronyms!) I couldn't eat certain foods without getting really bad stomach pains. Anyway, I saw a nutritionist who prescribed various heavy-duty pro-biotics & they worked like a dream.
