Wholewheat pasta with broccoli, chicken and passata

Good that you have a diagnosis - there are some real experts on PCOS around here as received some advice on behalf of cousin before, hope they find this thread.

Low fat meals I find good in winter are soups, stews etc filling and warm. Jacket pots with no butter but with tuna in low fat mayo or similar. Omlettes, frittata and of course salads. Stir fry is healthy and v.quick and drink lots of water to fill yourself up.

I was not sure where to post this tbh. Think I will look at the subjects.

Oh No, The gynie that I seen today said to me 'I can guarantee you 100% that it wont make you gain weight'. Maybe I should make a concious effort to try and lose weight before I consider it cause I definately cannot afford to gain weight.

PCOS sufferers often do very well following a low carb way of eating, so I believe.

Oh dear that doesnt sound good. I am at the end of my patience with pcos and cannot live with the symptoms any more so the coil is my last chance but I am not convinced and everytime I hear of someone on here it just confirmes my fears. I really dont know what to do.

My sil put on 2 stone with the mirena which has dropped off her since it was removed. No change in diet either. Could be just coincidence but like herbietea says it is listed amoung the known side effects. I did extensive research on the mirena when I was looking for alternatives to the diaphragm. Weight gain is a side effect... it is listed by the manufacturer as a side effect so the gynae has misinformed you. It is more likely that you won't put on weight but he/she can not guarantee you 100% that you won't. Why would the manufacturer list it is a side effect if as your gynae says it 100% won't happen?

I've never heard of someone being recommended to use a coil as a treatment for PCOS. I'm surprised that a gynae is your final port of call tbh, it's considered to be more of a metabolic disorder now than a gynae one.

I recommend Colette Harris's books on PCOS, there are quite a few of them so go for one of the most recent ones as that will be most up to date. Check out the Verity website as well as it has lots of useful info.

A low carb or low GI diet works very well for women with PCOS, as does lots of exercise.

Some women have Metformin prescribed for PCOS. I was considering asking for this when I was diagnosed with type II diabetes and so I was prescribed Metformin for that. The difference to my PCOS symptoms is astounding since taking it, much better than anything I've tried before.

I have pcos and have the mirena coil.

I haven't put on any weight with it/because of it. I have however put on a bit of weight due to shin splints and not being allowed to run

I don't think it is an accurate indicator of the effects of mirena to go by a thread on here.
You would get lots of negative responses about all sorts of things if you asked such as the mini pill, condoms etc etc.

In my opinion the mirena coil is the same as anything else, it will suit some people and not others.

It has changed my life for the better, i am now much less up and down hormonally and the hirsutism etc have lessened dramatically. I've had the mirena coil for around 8 yrs now. I have had antibiotics for 12 months (topical solution) for the acne and that has cleared completely.

I think with pcos you really do have to remember that different things will work at different times and for different people.
I was previously prescribed really high doses of evening primrose but tbh that did fuck all. The coil was also a bit of a last resort for me and has worked well.
I haven't had a period for 13 yrs so cannot give you any indicator of what effect it had in that department.

I have diagnosed pcos with no cysts at present.

LiberalIdleOlogy · 05/01/2009 14:50

I gained a considerable amount of weight on the Mirena - sorry that's not what you want to hear.

Idrankthechristmasspirits · 05/01/2009 14:50

Sorry, forgot to add, the mirena isn't permenent. If it doesn't work you can have it removed.

shootfromthehip · 05/01/2009 14:51

I have a mirena coil- it has been great, no more terrible periods/ weight issues/ mood swings, however I do have a face and back covered in spots!!! Will live with it but it is a bummer. Good luck

singyswife · 05/01/2009 14:52

Thank you for your frank replys. I will check out the verity page and I have a collette harris pcos book which I will re-read and put the things into practice. When do you find time to excercise??? I have 3 kids, 2 dogs a house and I work part time, when do I fit it in??

Thanks for the replies.
