cervical cancer and contraception

Mamazon · 03/01/2009 16:20

i have had a couple of positivr smear tests and had laser treatment on pre cancerous cells.

i haven't had to use contraception since my treatment as ive been single for the most part.

now im not (yay ) what are we thinking is the safest option. i know that they don't advise the pill. obviously condoms is the obvious choice but they are proving less than ideal.

is a coil really the only option?

What about the diaphram?

I would have thought that abarrier method of some sort was the best to help you avoind HPV which can be carried by anyone without symptoms.

I know that condoms are not ideal, but neither is chancing cancer!
best ask your FPC or drs.

Any method is open to you in theory.

The combined pill and patch are relatively but not absolutely contraindicated unless you have had cervical cancer (not just abnormal or precancerous cells).

Any method with progesterone is OK too- mini pill, implant, depo injection, mirena coil.

There's also the copper coil, condoms, diaphragm, natural family planning with persona if you want non-hormonal methods.

I would mention that if you have previously had cone biopsies or extensive laser treatment to your cervix, that a coil can be more tricky (and uncomfortable) to fit. Therefore, if you think that this is an option, I would recommend having it done at a FPC clinic.

Speak to a GP with an interest in FP or your local FPC.

You could also have a look here for more info about the various methods.

Mamazon i had colcoscopy treatment(loop diathermy sp) a few years ago. I recently was at my GP to have the Mirena Coil put in. She wasn't able to do it as i have scar tissue on my cervix.

I am going to have it done at the FPC soon hopefully.

Mamazon · 03/01/2009 20:29

yes i have had a colposcopy too.

that website doesn't mention not using the pill if you have had these issues so im hopefull, though im sure i read before that it was a bad idea.

i really don't think i like the idea of plastic paper clip stuck in my fanjo somewhere.

I am having the Mirena to stop me having awful painful heavy periods every 13 -15 days hopefully.

I can put up with the paper clip idea if i can have normal/no periods tbh.

I have had no further problems with positive smear tests since i had the treatment btw. That was around 11 years ago so hope things go fine for you too x

plastic papaer clip - do you mean the coil- it goes in your uterus not your fanny!

aGalChangedHerName · 04/01/2009 08:58

I know where it goes lol and i'm sure Mamazon does too!!

honestfriend · 04/01/2009 09:00

fine- just an odd comment to make!

Mamazon · 04/01/2009 13:38

lol yes it's ok Honest, i do know where it goes and i know its not a paperclip.
but im ever so slightly squeamish about things being lodged in my body and in my mind it is how i imagine it.

though im liking the idea of no periods!
