Brother vomitting every hour since boxing day, can anyone advise

He (rather his dp did) telephoned the OOH today who said he had to 'ride it out'. He has a thumping sore head (think from dehydration) and they gave him dioralite. They have cats and have just got a puppy (thought that might be relavant). His dp was sick for approx 3 days but is now better but he is still being sick every hour. Can anyone advise???

Definitely need to guard against/deal with dehydration, which the headache is almost certainly a symptom of.

Lots of fluids, whatever he can take, and Dioralyte is great - or flat Coke/lemonade.

Doubt the pets are relevant.

But above all, get a doctor out to him if he's been vomiting for this length of time.

every hour since boxing day? Really? Over a week now? I think he should insist on being seen - call NHS direct straight away and see what they say.

CarGirl · 02/01/2009 20:33

Think I'd go to a walk in centre or A&E, it really doesn't sound normal to be vommiting so much for so long. The dr should be prepared to come out and at the very least give him an anti-sickness injection.

singyswife · 02/01/2009 20:33

He did call NHS Direct and they diagnosed over the phone and told him to take the rehydration sachets and ride it out. He is never ill so this is bad for him. I have checked the symptoms of the norovirus thing and it says that it should only last about 3 days.

He isnt physically able to go to the gp/OOH and they wouldnt come and see him. Should I tell his partner to phone again??

CarGirl · 02/01/2009 20:35

Yes I would. I would demand for someone to come and see him tbh.

CarGirl · 02/01/2009 20:36

Is it just bile he's bringing up, nothing nastier/more sinister?

ClausImWorthIt · 02/01/2009 20:37

YES!

He needs to be seen, IMO.

Has he travelled anywhere prior to Christmas? i.e. could it be something else?

Is he eating anything at all? What is he drinking?

(PS I am not a doctor!)

singyswife · 02/01/2009 20:38

He is not eating and anything he is drinking he is brining up again. He hasnt been anywhere since xmas other than down south to collect a car. There are a lot of bugs doing the rounds up here but I havent heard of any that do this to people.

I would demand for him to be seen and threaten to call an ambulance if no joy, if he cannot make his way to a DR and noone is coming to him the only way for him to be seen would be ambulance to a&E.
Hope you get it sorted for him, with that length of time vomiting he is going to be dehydrated and would benefit from some IV fluid.
Drs should come out to prevent spread to an NHS premisis

CarGirl · 02/01/2009 20:39

Was he abroad before christmas?

Def not sore anywhere like appendix?

singyswife · 02/01/2009 20:42

Apart from his head he is not complaining of anything sore. I wish the gp had come out and looked at him, just tried to phone them but they must be asleep. At least their wee boy is away for a couple of days and my mum has their puppy.

Brother still vomiting and now has a blinding sore head. He cannot take any painkillers as the minute they hit his stomach he is sick. He says it is not enough of an emergency to go to a&e but I feel somthing needs to be done. He has taken countless rehydration sachets and still feels really ill. Can anyone give any advice to make him bounce back??

OP posts:
CarGirl · 04/01/2009 15:47

seriously he does need to be seen by a dr, he may be very dehydrated which could be damaging his organs?

singyswife · 04/01/2009 15:49

He says he has had about 40 pints of water (prob a slight exaggeration) and 9 rehydration sachets. He says he will go and see his own gp tomorrow but I feel that is another day down the line. It is really starting to worry me now. His gf has had it too but not as bad although she seems to have a good day then a bad day, could it be ecoli or something dodgy like that??

OP posts:
CarGirl · 04/01/2009 15:50

no idea I have no medical experience, sorry

BecauseImWorthIt · 04/01/2009 15:51

Has he tried soluble painkillers? Something like Solpadeine would probably be good.

I really think you need to insist that he is seen, either by taking him to a&e or getting the doctor to come out to him.

Flightattendant7 · 04/01/2009 15:53

It could be food poisoning if it has been going on this long.
I think he is being a bit silly not to take it more seriously tbh, you must be very worried.
I guess you can't make him go. He's a grown up so ought to be getting seen.

They might need to take samples and test for nastier organisms, that need treatment specifically to kill them off iyswim.

Is it possible he is exagerrating the rest as well? not meaning to sound funny but if I had been that ill for over a week I think I would possibly be dead.

Could it possibly be a water/kidney infection?
Sounds simular (sp?) to what I had a couple of years ago.

It can cause severe vomiting and doesn't always include pain when urinating. The symptoms also continue until the infection has been treated.

singyswife · 04/01/2009 16:09

I think I will phone my mum as he will listen to her if she says he needs a dr then he will go see one. Plus if a mother phones on behalf of her 27yo son then it would sound better than if he phones and just sounds all pathetic. He genuinely is this unwell although I can see where you are coming from in the making it up thing. My mum has actually seen him and can honestly say he is that ill.
