What are my chances of NOT picking up a bug/virus at Center Parcs next week?

Last year my mother in law picked up the norovirus there. This year there are so many flu like bugs going around too. Can we actually spend a week there swimming everyday and stay healthy????

LOL - I would get some pro-biotics for all the family, get some vitamin c suppliments. Get some of that handwash that you take about and dont eat junk food.

IlanaK · 01/01/2009 21:54

Ok, I understand all those things except the junk food one. Why?

viral infections like norovirus can be caught anywhere.so go on holiday dont worry

IlanaK · 01/01/2009 21:57

Noro worries me most (slightly emetophpbic), but also flu and other nasty cough things.

but as they are viral and highly contagious you could catch it in asda!dont waste money on anti-bac handwash.good hand hygiene is adequate enough, and frankly transmission can be air borne droplets anyway

believer07 · 01/01/2009 22:00

because, most viruses are opportunistic, ever notice how some people get stuff and others don't. Well its all about the condition of your body and the nutrition levels. Take sugar for example, eating sugar lowers the capacity of your immune system for hours, so if you come into contact with someone who has the flu then your body is hampered from mounting an adequate response and the virus overwhelms the system and you get ill. Also junk food has little nutritional value and actually takes away vitamins to process the empty calories. In order to work properly your body has to be free of toxins and able to get rid of toxins fast, so if you load it up with crap how does it stand a chance of staying healthy.

Ok thanks. That makes sense. We will try to stay relatively healthy eating there but do plan eating out a few times. I take a probiotic everyday. The kids don't, but they eat live yoghurt. They have cod liver oil daily though - I wonder if that helps.

center parcs...thats the place thats like one big humid, warm , wet, dome coered place full of children...

good luck

ScottishMummy · 01/01/2009 22:10

BB what are you referring to "don't let responses on here get you more worried"?nothing alarmist here

frankly you could get norovirus at home from the postman

foxinsocks · 01/01/2009 22:10

I tell you what ilana, if you have survived the tube without picking something up, you'll be ok in Center Parcs ;-)

not much you can do anyway...as everyone else has said, you could get someone sneezing on you as you step out your door tomorrow!

IlanaK · 01/01/2009 22:12

Lol - I haven't been on the tube recently. I know I am being silly about it, but lastyear's week there was ruined by norovirus even though it was just my mother in law who got it really badly and ds2 extremely mildly. You are right, we could get viruses anywhere, but it does seem more lkely in an environment where there are lots of people packed closely together.

Also, even though they have signs up saying don't swim for 48 hours if you have been ill, everyone ignores it as they don't want to waste their holiday. Does chlorine kill bugs?

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 01/01/2009 22:15

yes I know what you mean

and I am not even in the slightest bit emetophobic (or whatever it is called) and I can't stand the thought of getting sick on holiday, for the purely selfish reason that it fucks up your holiday :-)

think chlorine kills a lot but good handwashing will do a lot of good

in the end, those vomiting bugs are so contagious, hard not to get them I think if in close proximity to someone who has them

will keep my fingers crossed for you

(I also tend to try and go swimming at times when I think it would be quieter, like late on or v early....just because it's more pleasant and avoids that horrendous changing room crush)

ScottishMummy · 01/01/2009 22:16

ilana go enjoy your holiday and don't waste effort pondering what if's.

bekkaboo · 01/01/2009 22:26

everytime we go we com back with something! DSGerman measles at 9 months and chickenpox in sept, i dont know anyone who comes back well from our local one!!

Hulababy · 01/01/2009 22:33

Well, we went for a wole week before Christmas for the first time, and none of us came away without any bugs (6 adults, 2 children).

foxinsocks · 01/01/2009 22:37

we've been there 5 times I think (used to go a fair bit pre school kids when you could get v cheapo deals!) and we've never picked up anything either
