Steralisation operation gone wrong.......

I was steralised on Monday but the surgeon inserted the instrument too close to my bladder and went in it. I now have to wear a catheter and have an appointment to go back for a scan on my bladder on the 12th Jan to see if the wound has healed and if they can remove it. Has this happened to anyone else? Is it common?

Yikes! I know it's a risk of any surgery in that area and the risk is 1 in 100 with laporoscopic surgery. Oh how horrid for you. Hopefully it'll heal quickly though.

Thanks!! Its a bit tricky with a 3 year old and a 1 year old and a bag of wee!!

Ow!

I was sterilised and only felt a bit sore! I am sure that it will heal, just give it time & rest. The body is marvellous at self-healing.

A good lawyer maybe?

That is terrible. When I had my 4th c-section & sterilisation, the surgeon was concerned about puncturing my bladder so when he had finished he ran a blue dye through my bladder to make sure - had green wee for 24 hrs .

I hope you heal quickly and well - you do not want ongoing problems in that area.

Did they apologise to you ?

purplehighheels · 01/01/2009 21:12

I am really sorry that you have had some complications - remember to drink lots to prevent any UTI's.

believer07 - I really don't think that was helpful. Puncturing of the bladder is a small, but widely recognised complication of laparoscopic surgery. All operations come with a degree of risk. This increasingly litigious mentality annoys me no end!!

He came and saw me in the morning and said he was sorry it had happened. I suppose it is just one of those things. I just wondered how common it was and if I should get rid of this bag when they scan me.

Bad luck, sounds rotten. Hopefully all will be well after your scan and the catheter can be removed soon.

When you were consented for your operation, they will have mentioned to you the risk of damaging intra-abdominal structures while carrying out the operation. It happens in about 1/200 procedures, and most heal without a problem. The comment about lawyers isn't really applicable as its a known risk of laparoscopic surgery, which should have been discussed during consent.

This is why blokes should be snipped!
