I know this can point to a tumour in the eye.

I don't know this woman that well, she is an old workmate. We are not 'pick up the phone and chat mates'

Should I tell her or is that being melodramatic?

Tell her - who cares if it's being melodramatic - there's the well being of a child potentially at stake - his sight, his life? It's worth her thinking you are over-reacting just in case imo.

chequersandroastedchestnuts · 01/01/2009 09:58

God yes, please mention it. Imagine if you didn't and he was very sick.

I've seen a picture of an 8 month baby with a tumour and you can very clearly see the difference, I really don't think there's any harm in mentioning it. I mean, she may be worried, but she would rather have it checked I'm sure.

TheOtherMaryPoppinsDiets · 01/01/2009 10:00

Why not find a website online ( there must be many) telling about this red eye white eye thing and send it to all of your facebook friends asking them to check their childrens photographs.

StealthPoHoHoHo · 01/01/2009 10:03

no, just tell her, directly. Mention you don't want to scaremonger but you couldn't not mention it. Old workmate or friend I'd be grateful, whether it was something or nothing
(BTW DS sometimes gets that when we try to remove red eye from his photos with varying degrees of success)

SparklyBaubleFeast · 01/01/2009 10:07

wouldnt the red eye mean the flash of the camera?
can you google images of what you think it is, before mentioning to friend.

TheOtherMaryPoppinsDiets · 01/01/2009 10:08

It's the white eye that's the problem not the red eye SBF

SparklyBaubleFeast · 01/01/2009 10:10

oh

so then google that,
which was what you said alrady marypoppins

StealthPoHoHoHo · 01/01/2009 10:13

I think she is worried about retinoblastoma. Which is a possibility. As I said though, removing the red eye in some software programs gives a dull white eye - it gave me a shock when I saw it

mellyonion · 01/01/2009 10:13

i agree...its worth mentioning....my friend actually had this cancer when she was little...she lost her eye, but survived because it was found early...

there was a news story about online friends...can you drop her a line and say hello, blah blah...hope you don't mind, but one of your baby pics reminded me of this....

here it is

let us know how you get on.

DisastrousNuclearAccident · 01/01/2009 10:19

The white eye can be caused by a number of things. Most commonly it is caused by astigmatism (I think that is what it is called - where the eyes are not both aligned) because the flash does not hit both eyes in alignment. But then Retinoblastoma can cause a squint.

Ask her to check other photo's...if it is a oneoff photo it may just be the angle of the camera - if there are other photo's like it then it would be much more concerning. However, the most dangerous cause is retinoblastoma and should always be checked just to rule out if nothing else.

How old is the child?...I think that virtually all cases of Rb or diagnosed in pre-school children.

DrNortherner · 01/01/2009 10:35

I'm not sure how old he is, looks about 4/5 years maybe?

OP posts:
NAB3lovelychildren · 01/01/2009 10:37

Better to mention it and be wrong...

DisastrousNuclearAccident · 01/01/2009 11:14
DrNortherner · 01/01/2009 11:38

The more I look at the pic I know I have to mention it. I'll not rest otherwise.

Thanks.

I had exactly this situation with a photo I took of my nephew. You will feel better when you mention it and I agree it has to be done.

whitenoise · 01/01/2009 11:41

what situation is it in?

There are about 3 of my DS3 that have cme out with one white eye and one red but when i looked at it we were in a place that had flashing disco lights and they were reflected oddly in his eyes. subsequent pictures in different conditions (resulting in red eyE!) haven;t resulted in the white appearing

DrNortherner · 01/01/2009 11:42

No km she is not a mumsnetter!

it could be the angle of the child wrt the camera but in those circumstances a friendly email wouldn't go a miss

Just say that you are worried - i would appreciate that kind of email

StealthPo09IsHere · 02/01/2009 21:28

Did anything happen about this? FWIW I'd be grateful either way
