Persistent temperature and headache for 5 days - is this a virus?

It's me who's suffering not my dc. Began whlst abroad in the middle east recently. now contineud for 5 days. Not severe headache - more unsevere pain in the neck ( literally!). No photophobia etc . I think temp is pretty low grade - about 38C but is bloody consistent. disappars when i take nurofen but when that wears off its right back. Nights are worse -intermittent shiverying and sweats ( light sweats). No maleria either where i went.

Anyone have/had this? So bad i can't go out on new years eve .
Also does anyone find as they get older ( I'm 40) that their ability to shake off bugs gets slower? I've b een ill at least 4 times since sept each time fairly badly.

Sorry you're ill on NY eve...and sounds unpleasant. TBH, I have usually found viral temps go up and down, higher in evening etc....if its persistent, and no better on Friday, I would go to the GP for peace of mind.

dd1 had a fever virus (with cough, though) which lasted about six days, and which included sore neck and/or head at times...but it was clearly viral, with temps spiking in the evenings, and a cough etc.

As for age and ability to shake bugs, yes, probably...but its hard for me to tell what is worn down immunity (me) and what is sleep-depriving, virally transmitting LOs (them)

Hope you're better v early into 2009....

My Mum and Dad have had this since christmas Eve and DD's all week.

DesperateHousewifeToo · 31/12/2008 23:01

Thought I would answer you on this thread, even though I'm sure your mind is on other things now

We have all been suffering from this bug/virus in differing forms. (Hence no desire for an evening out tonight)

Ds had very high temp and headaches for 4 days up to xmas eve (then a bad allergic reaction to something that he would normally be ok with on xmas morning).

Dd had high temp and cold symptoms a few days before ds and then had cough and vomitting over xmas.

Dh had cold and very bad chest/asthma worsened.

I have had headache, high temp for couple of days before xmas and now have sinusitis (sp?).

We are all on the mend though so hope you will be soon too.

I'm off to bed. Night

It sounds more likely to be an infection, the pain is a gland that is swollen. You need to see your GP, there are other things you can pick up besides malaria.

I hope you are feeling better soon.

Thansk everuyone - scrooged , like wht ? Please be specific>

This (and I hate to worry you) sounds like the way my shingles started.

Got any stabbing pains anywhere on your body?

scrooged · 31/12/2008 23:14

I can't be specific, I'm no expert on tropical diseases and am paediatric trained. It could also be glandular fever depending on where the pain is.

lisalisa · 31/12/2008 23:18

yes coldtits in my head. What is shingles - isn't it chicken pox?

scrooged - pain is not gland related. it is very specifically in my neck -hard to touch my chin etc.

You have glands everywhere, under your jaw for example.

Shingles is chicken pox for people who have had chicken pox. It's the virus awakening.

Coldtits · 31/12/2008 23:26

Shingles is hell On Earth, to be honest. Does your skin itch over the site of the pain? Does the p[ain kind of explode when you stroke a finger over it? Or is it deeper inside?
