Waking up drenched ...

kando · 28/12/2008 10:08

For the past couple of nights, and on a fairly regular basis over the past few months, I've been waking up drenched in sweat. I also get woken up at night because my mouth is completely dry - no saliva at all (this doesn't happen on the same nights as I'm waking up drenched in sweat btw). I do feel quite tired sometimes but other than that I feel fine, no illness or anything. Does this happen to anyone else, any ideas what it could be?

Kando,
The exact same thing happens to me! The waking up drenched in sweat happens regularly.

No obvious reason either but I'll keep an eye on this thread with interest!

Kristingle · 28/12/2008 11:02

have you mentioned it to your GP? If it were me i woudl have it checked out just in case.

honestfriend · 28/12/2008 12:03

How old? menopause/hormones seems most likely explanation, or a virus- I used to sweat like that for months after glandular fever.

kando · 29/12/2008 13:46

Sorry for not replying - not been able to get back online! I'm 36. Haven't mentioned either to GP, but if it keeps up then I guess I'll have to! My mum had an early menopause (started when she was also 36) - but not sure if that has any relevance?

yes that is relevant and it could well be early menopause

worth a chat with Gp and he/she may be able to do blood test to aid diagnosis

honestfriend · 29/12/2008 14:36

Very relevant- age of meno is hereditary in most cases, but not all.

kando · 30/12/2008 08:26

oh lordy. Best have a chat with the GP then. And gawd help dh and the dcs if I'm anything like my mother was!!!

it might be other things as wel - or nothing - but make sure he/she does set of bloods including full blood count (FBC) and thyroid (TFT) as well as female hormones

good luck

cheshirekitty · 30/12/2008 21:02

Could be meno, or thyroid or diabetes. You need to see your GP and get it checked out. Are you drinking a lot? Have you lost weight recently?

kando · 31/12/2008 11:16

Thanks. Will make an appointment at doctors to get this checked out. I've not lost or gained any weight recently. I did wonder if it might be alcohol as I have been "indulging" a fair bit recently but I did stop for a while and it was still happening when I hadn't had anything to drink (and during that time I'd been drinking water instead of alcohol). Will let you know how I get on, although I expect I won't get an appointment to see the doctor for at least a couple of weeks!

could be alcohol or even caffeine withdrawal. Sweating heavily is a well known withdrawal symptom.

kando · 05/01/2009 14:48

Appointment booked for Thursday. Will let you know what doc says.

Had a blood test earlier this week. Docs called me today to say that my glucose level is high (6.1, which doesn't really mean much to me!) and that I've got to go back and have another test after I've "fasted". Haven't had any night sweats for over a week now though!

LittleWeePickle · 23/01/2009 13:58

I had this for a couple of years in my early 30s.

Docs had no explanation, and it stopped for no apparent reason. I would wake up sodden every night, and before going to bed would lay a towel on the mattress, and have a spare T-shirt ready to change into in the small hours.

No period problems, and I had DS1 at age 39. New baby due in 5 weeks when I will be 41, so it hasn't affected my fertility.

Still no idea what it was though!

kando · 25/01/2009 08:26

LWP - suspect this is what might be happening to me too! Have not heard anything since second blood test last week - they would have called yesterday I think, if there were any problems. I suspect I will have to call them to find out the results, but I am going to see the doctor again as it just doesn't "feel" right! The doc said at my initial appointment that it could be stress related (but they say that about a lot of things, don't they?!) Glad you got over it - had to get up and get changed the other night again, it just feels so horrible!
