Cosmetic Surgery abroad?

idontlikesundays · 27/12/2008 11:21

Not sure whether this is the appropriate forum. I am starting to research having surgery on my breasts to have them lifted - have lots of excess skin after losing weight, am only 33 but have the breasts of a 70 year old. Have discovered that surgery abroad is much cheaper than in the UK. Has anyone ever gone abroad for surgery and would you recommend it? Any advice, recommendations etc would be great - whether you've had surgery in the UK or abroad.

someone I worked with the other night (an agency nurse) had a nose job done 4 months ago in Turkey. They had done a lovely job for £1300.

idontlikesundays · 27/12/2008 13:13

I was looking at a clinic in Prague earlier, and they do a breast lift for £2900, including flights and accomodation, where as if I were to have it done here it would cost about £5600. I guess I would be very worried about after care once I'd arrived back in the UK though, especially as the op I'd be having is more complicated than implants.

i think they do it well in Dubai.

honestfriend · 27/12/2008 13:51

£5600 sounds a lot- I am sure you could get it for less- have you looked around?

Lulumamaloveslatkes · 27/12/2008 13:52

can you see your GP and see if it is possible to have your op done on the NHS?

you might save money going abroad, but surely something as serious as surgery should not be done on the cheap?

what about after care and possible complications?

i would look at the options for surgery in the UK first

BlaDeBla · 27/12/2008 14:12

I've had reconstructive surgery, and it can be complicated. I really think it would be a good idea to talk about it with your gp or a surgeon over here. Although it may be cheaper to have the op done abroad, remember that your health is paramount and if things don't go to plan your health could be at risk.
this website may help. She has done fantastic work.

If it goes wrong, there is no one to sort it out. It really is a false economy to go abroad for cosmetic surgery. They are cheap because there are not the same assurances as you get within UK medicine.

If you are really strapped for cash, go to Rigby and Peller for a good bra.

idontlikesundays · 27/12/2008 14:54

Thanks, I know you are all right really. I haven't "shopped" around yet, just starting to look into all possibilites. Good underwear does help, I have that sorted, but it is about feeling good about myself. I have worked hard to lose weight and maintain it, but of course exercise can't help breast tissue. Friends agree, my boobs are in a bad state - think those women on 10 years younger - and whilst hubby says that he doesn't care and likes my breasts, he also agrees that they are nothing like what they used to be, and it is more than just ageing and having babies. I feel like it is rather vain and self-indulgent, but I know it would make me happier. It is more than just wanting larger breasts, I don't want larger breasts, I just want breasts that look okay.

I think it is very difficult sometimes to accept ourselves as how we are made, and of course surgery seems to offer a solution. Breast implants are not ideal and they don't last forever. What will you do when you do start to age and everything starts going downhill for real and you don't have the muscle structure or hormones to prop it all up?

I'm sorry I am playing the Devil's Advocate, but I expect that you in all your skin are really pretty fantastic.

10 years Younger is a truly horiible programme and feeds our insecurities and seeks to empty our wallets, when really what the women need more than anything is a bit of self-confidence and a decent haircut.

i could never afford an apronectomy (tummy tuck). not in a million years. It galls me that I have to have this vile hanging, sagging stomach that almost covers my fanjo. I had 3 mahoosive babies and lost weight and the more weight I loose the saggier it is. Its horrific. No amount of spandex/gok wan/trinny and sussanah drawers can sort it.

The thought of getting my horrific belly out and having sex makes me feel nauseous..

But because I have a pretty face and nice boobs I am expected to get on with it.

I hate it that this is just available to the rich. £7k on myself is just not going to happen with 3 kids and a modest income and a degree to get through.

Sorry for hijack. Rant over. As you were.

MoreSpamThanGlam.

Read this. Things can go wrong when you go abroad for major surgery.

Fivesetsofschoolfees · 27/12/2008 18:48

Also, for surgery in this country, you typically have at least one outpatient appt in the weeks that follow the procedure to check that all is healing well.

Unless you hang around abroad for several weeks, adding to the cost, you are not going to get the follow up.

Even my dog had follow up after surgery.

MoreSpamThanGlam · 27/12/2008 20:56

I wonder if I could do a belly raffle?

BlaDeBla · 27/12/2008 22:53

What's that? As Lulumama suggests, is there anything available on NHS, especially if it affecting you psychologically?

I have one slightly lumpy rubber boob these days which may or may not need to be operated on again, and rather a lumpier back from where they took a bit out to make my boob out of. The whole procedure took about 9 hours and the recovery time was considerable. You can get nerve damage, and sometimes it's permanent. It's very much swings and roundabouts. I wasn't given a choice in whether or not to have a mastectomy, but I guess I did have a choice in whether to get a new boob or not. (I thought the dogs would probably chew one that just went in a bra - yum yum)

MoreSpamThanGlam · 27/12/2008 23:53

Its nothing!!! Just a (pathetic) joke really

Not gonna happen I can assure you...

vampirelover765 · 28/12/2017 11:50

I went abroad for breast reduction because NHS wouldn't pay for it. I had all the needed documents but they said it wasn't enough. So I found clinic in Czech republic where my co-worker went for her rhinoplasty. I wasn't sure about it at first because I don't really like this co-worker but then I googled Forme Clinic and after some research and Skype call with the surgeon I decided it was a good call going there. And it really was. I don't regret going there my life improved with my new smaller breasts.

gullrock1 · 21/12/2018 12:57

I tried the NHS after having twins but they refused to do my tummy tuck even through i had a large overhang. In the end i went to Adam at europesurgery.co.uk to have a tummy tuck after having twins. You can Skype call the surgeon there too.

Cas2 · 29/08/2019 15:45

I am also looking into surgery although it’s much cheaper abroad you don’t usually get a follow up check and in the uk you have these checks and can go back with any concerns after op 🤩

I have often wondered how does travel insurance work when going abroad for surgery?
