Cerazette....I want to come off this pill....will I cope?

I've been on Cerazette since DD2 was born - she is almost 5yrs old.

I still get periods but not every month. But when I do get them I get the most awful PMT.

I want to come off the pill anyway...I've been on the contraceptive for the last 20yrs and considering the fact I'm now into my 40s I think its time I came off the pill.

Cerazette is a low-dose mini pill. Just before I went on it, shortly after I had DD2, I had periods that were so incredibly heavy I found them almost impossible to cope with, hence why I was put on cerazette.

If I come off it and with it being a low-dose mini pill will my periods go back to being too heavy for me to cope with? I don't want to really try and it and see cos it could take weeks for the pill to get back into my system and work again...

Does anyone know? Whilst on the pill my periods are fine but its the PMT I can't cope with.

Have you thought about which contraception you will use to replace your pill? If heavy periods are a worry then maybe ask about the mirena.

i came off this for 2 months in the summer just to seee how things would be while off them and i had truly awful pain with my periods i went back on them .all i can say is give it a go .you can always go back on them

Other forms of contraception would be the condom! I'm half afraid to come off this pill tbh because I can remember how hard my periods were to deal with without being on the pill. I guess I ought to stay on it and just cope with the PMT.

I take tranexamic acid for my heavy periods and it's really great, mine are so heavy I kept getting aneamic.

What PMT symptoms do you have ? If its mood swings and/or breast tenderness I can highly recommend Evening Primrose Oil. Take a good strength capsule (1000mg) every day and see if it makes a difference, can even up it to 2000mg around PMT time.

I started taking them to help with painful periods. They made naff all difference with that ( subsequently found out that I suffer from Endometriosis) but they really stopped me feeling weepy a couple of days prior.

PMT symptons are extremely sore boobs and very VERY moody...I know I'm being a cow to live with but feel completely hopeless about it. I have got some Evening Primrose Oil in the cupboard....forgotton it helps actually - thanks for that.

I was put on tranexamic acid after I had DD2 and yes it did help but I was taken off of it and put straight onto the pill.

Why don't you try the Evening Primrose Oil for a couple of months and see how you feel about it as apparently it can take a bit of time to build up. Also dietary changes may help, try avoiding caffeine, alcohol and processed food around PMT time and see if that helps, maybe also take a multi vitamin. I'm sure if you googled PMT and diet probably get much more scientific detailed advice than that.

I don't know much about gynae matters, except for my own experience, but it could be that the very heavy periods are an indicator of something. However as you are in your mid 40s, in my completely non medical view, then it might be worth just sticking with the cerazette until menopause, rather than risking the alternatives. How many days do you have the PMT for and have you spoken to your doctor about it ?

whispywhisp · 26/12/2008 17:38

I've not spoken to my GP about it - never really get time to go to the Drs unless its with one of the kids! I did try EPO sometime ago but didn't take it for very long - I obviously need to stay on it for a lot longer if its going to help.

I eat quite a good diet actually - I live off salads, fruit and veg and don't eat processed food. I don't drink booze and I drink de-caff tea and coffee because caffeine keeps me awake at night.

I know the feeling, I hate bothering them, it was actually a very kind mumsnetter that persuaded me to go to the doctors about my awful periods and meant I got my Endometriosis diagnosis.

Check the strength of your EPO tables, they aren't magic bullets, but may well help. I'd also recommend talking to the nice people in Holland & Bartlett, they are usually very knowledgeable about what supplements can help.

But if it hasn't helped in a couple of months, do go to your GPs.

Thanks Rookie...I've always had problems with my periods..ever since they started almost 30yrs ago! I will be glad when I start nearing 50 and they stop! I come from a background where all the women in our family have suffered with them. I will dig out my EMO and providing they are in date I will start taking them today! Thank you for your help. x

you can have something done called endometrial_ablation if you are 100% sure you are finished having children.hcd2.bupa.co.uk/fact_sheets/html/endometrial_ablation.html

whispywhisp · 28/12/2008 20:18

I bought two pots of Evening Primrose Oil today! 1000mg per tab. One a day. Let's see if it helps!!!!

My PMT was much better on cerazette than normally. Mind you, I bled pretty well constantly so may be that was why . I was convinced at the start that I was going to be one of those lucky people whose periods stopped completely . Also, if you do come off it I conceived immediately so don't think 'oh it'll take a while to get back to normal!'
