  • but has anyone's hubby had it done? How was the op? How much did he do/not do after? How long after the op did you have sex? Hope this is not too personal (we've had worse!!)

Mine had it 18 months ago. He expected it to be bad , but afterwards said (and I quote) don't know what all the fuss is about!! I have to say he's not the type of man who takes to his bed with a cold though...

I think it was about £500 and he booked a week off work , though he said he could have gone back the next day really. I gave him arnica tablets for 4 days before the op and he took them for a week or so after - though I drew the line at applying the cream Didn't really bruise at all.

Sex ? well it was probably about 2 to 3 weeks, I used it at a convenient excuse not to hurt him Hope this helps you, Any other questions - just ask away.

Hi rosehip - My brotherinlaw had this done about 6 months ago. He was told he had to come back for a couple checkups to have his semen checked for any live sperm because it takes several months for it to go away completely. They also recommend to use other birth control till youve had the couple checkups. Don't know much about the op other then he was back to work the next day.

My dh and I are also discussing this op to at this time.

MABS · 19/03/2003 15:29

it took 3 months in my dh's case, they say that the more sex you have, the quicker they are to be clear. I'm just surprised he's clear now on that basis

Hi Rosehip, my dh had the op two years ago and says he still feels the pain of the tubes being burnt!!

Our gp referred him to a Marie Stopes clinic, free of charge and only a two week waiting list,(mental preparation period). As I understand it the vasdeferons (?sp) are cut then either tied or burnt. His were burnt and from sad conversations with many gelded friends it appears to be less painful and to have a quicker recovery time if the tubes are tied.

As for comparing the pain of labour to this itsy bitsy op... woo betide anyone who dares, of course there is the wonderful end product for us, while they limp away from theatre a lesser man!

Don't listen too much to my cynical babble, my dh is the biggest babe I've cared for, in his book he's suffered many a stroke and heart attack, had several bouts of cancer and the occasional collapsed lung, poor boy.

On a more positive note, it has relieved an enormous amount of post coital stress... with regard to concerns over yet another pregnancy!

Urge them to go I say!

My DH had the snip 2 years ago, he had a week off work, but could have gone back after 2 days, although it was sore for a few days, and it all went black, he was okay. He had a hernia op the previous year and said that pain for the hernia op was much much worse.

My bf had it about3 years ago, free on NHS and done very quickly and efficiently in just 2 appointments (one with both of us to check that we both agreed about it and then the ouchy bit for him the week after!). He had a couple of days lounging around reading the papers but then was fine; I think we had sex about a week after - and he's never regretted it; other than the nasty tight pants he had to wear for a few days to keep it all in!

Kazziegirl · 19/03/2003 22:43

My Dh had the snip about 18 months ago and said it was fine. He felt uncomfortable and he did bruise quite badly. He had about 3 days off work and I think we had sex after about 10 days. He had to do a semen check after about 16 weeks to get the all clear and like others have mentioned - the more sex you have the quicker he will be given the all clear. My Dh says it's the best £270 he has ever spent! Good Luck - let us know how he gets on!

I had mine on the NHS and had booked the following two days off work. The procedure was going OK until it suddenly hurt like hell. I think the doctor was dragging the tube to get a decent length out of the body. On returning to work, I could only manage a couple of hours and then stayed off for two more weeks. It felt as though I had a piece of elastic stretched taught in my groin. After the two weeks, I stayed at work but was in varying degrees of pain for about 12 months. During that year many of the people who asked me why I was limping had had the op themselves. None had had the same problem as me.
I've no idea whether my tubes were burned or tied.
I've known plenty of chaps at work who have only taken the afternoon off - and one lad who had it done in the a.m. and was back at work in the p.m. One chap had his done in a hospital that routinely gave a general anaesthetic (they told him it was easier to do if everything was relaxed).
Was it worth it? Now that the pain has gone, the answer is definitely yes. "I'm a couple of days late" brings no fears now. Firing blanks is great.
Would I have it done again? Yes. I'd try to get recommendations about the doctors - not about the clinic but about specific doctors. I'm not sure how available such information is. NHS or private - either would do me, but I'd definitely try to speak to previous "clients".

stuarts advice sounds very sensible, him and my dh do definately seem to be in the minority.

good luck

SimonHoward · 23/03/2003 15:31

Oh if only I was allowed to get this done.

shelleyb · 24/03/2003 13:39

My dh had his done last summer. He went to a Marie Stopes clinic (they are spread around UK) as a few of my friends husbands had recommended them. I think it cost around £250. He was sore for a couple of days and also bruised quite badly. But he had it done on a Friday and was back at work on the Monday. I think we had sex after about 2 weeks (obviously not very memorable ).

Tortington · 24/03/2003 18:30

my hubby had it done and we swear to this day he must of had a lady doctor who hated men because he was bruised so badly we think they played ping pong with his testicles in the operating room.

but as you say it cannot be as bad as childbirth. so i told him to stop moaning, until he could give birth to twins he doesnt know the meaning of pain.
