Ok so this has been going on for over 6 months now, and I'm gonna try and get an appointment at the drs tomorrow but looking for any advice/reassure in the mean time.

Dh's penis was really red and itchy, used thrush cream, cleared it up, had sex and within 2 days it was all red and inflamed. Cue using cream, a week later, all gone, have sex and it would come back again.

He went to the doctors, who prescribed strong anti-b's which cleared it up - havent had sex for a while up until 2 days ago, then this morning its back, all red and itchy (sorry TMI)

Its obvious that he is "catching" it from me, although I havent had any real syptoms, other than slight increased discharge.

It just seems like its a vicious circle at the moment, thats bee going on for months and months. Its putting us both off having sex, and is really embarrasing for me.

I've had a wee look on the internet, found some "self help" tips for avoiding it - actimel, tea tree oil on tampax during period, changing tampon more often, it also says that in re-occuring cases the dr can prescibe anti-b's to take once a week to stop it coming back.

Has anyone got any experience of this/can offer any words of wisdom/advice?

Many Thanks, sorry its so long.

have you taken the oral treatment (tablet) for thrush to completely clear it from yourself

I think you are right, you are reinfecting each other

get a dose each from the chemist and take on the same day

leave sex for a few days

and also, are you ok for lubrication during sex?

dh and I used to suffer with recurring bouts of this until we started to use a fab lubricator, Haven't had an attack in months despite plenty of action

Ditto- oral thrush tablet- Diflucan or Canestan over the counter- no tight knickers, synthetic knickers, or tight trousers or tights, showers instead of baths. Also, avoiding sweet sugary foods and refined carbs can help ans through lives off sugar, warmth and moisture.

Keep this up for a good couple of weeks and no sex meanwhile!

well...do you want to get better or not?

shitehawk · 21/12/2008 17:50

Antibiotics are crap for thrush - they make it worse, not better.

Take the Diflucan, use the cream, take the advice you've been given here and it will get better.

But don't go back for any more antibiotics, they are the wrong treatment completely for thrush.

iheartginashoes · 21/12/2008 18:01

Sorry dont think they were anti-b's...were possibly Diflucan - he had to take 1 a day for a week - does that sound right?

TBH the amount of people we have visiting over the next week sex will be the last thing on our minds!!

Diflucan is a single dose - so it doesn't sound like that. Anti-bs are usually a course of treatment over a week. Hope it wasn't anti-b's as thrush is a fungus and anti-b's treat bacteria.

I have had many many doses of serious thrush that doesn't clear up with any of the creams. As well as taking Diflucan, cutting back on sugar is really helpful, also reducing stress, wiping from front to back after pooing, cotton underwear for both of you and no sex until things are cleared up. Otherwise you'll just re-infect each other.

If you do want to have sex sooner, it would be best to wear a condom and use lots of lubrication. It would reduce the chances of reinfection and lube would stop irritating your bits, which gives thrush a better chance.

I used to get thrush a lot but haven't had it once since I started using femfresh to wash instead of normal shower gel/soap. Might help, along with everything else?

honestfriend · 21/12/2008 18:45

You should not use soap on your genital area at all- only plain water.
Soap and shower gel are fine but don't get them on your bits as they will only irritate!
don't know about Femfresh, but reckon it's a good way for the company to make £££££s when all you need is warm water.

They were Fluc-something?

fluconazole ?

yep, tis treatment for thrush, but unusual to take one daily for a week, and if you didn't both take it at the same time you will re-infect each other

you can bypass your gp completely and ask for 2 single-dose treatments of Diflucan
