I thought it was flu - sore limbs, alternating fever and shivers, headache, lower back pain. But when i mentioned my one very tender and sore boob that was it.

So who's had it?
I thought that with DD being 9 months I'd escaped such things.
Arse. Arse. Arse.

i had ti twice

the dr gave me antibiotics but i threw them away i was afraid to take them

just feed feed feed and you will be ok

take paracetamol regularly

FCH · 18/12/2008 09:17

I had it quite soon after birth - sadly as had em cs and was on fabulous cocktail of drugs did not notice until one morning realised left boob was rock solid, bright red, burning hot and twice the size of the other one. Ended up back in hospital (fortunately maternity ward as baby still so young) and on IV anti-biotics. Baby went on to formula for a few days and I expressed loads and we reestablised feeding after - was rubbish though!!

Chaotica · 18/12/2008 09:17

I have the opposite advice - take the ABs or it may get worse... (don't want to describe the symptoms I had but you don't want them!)

BTW - the gp should check that the ABs are OK with bf. Just ask.

TrinityRhino · 18/12/2008 09:19

I had it last month for the very first time ever
I am feedin my third child and she is 22 months

I second, definitely take the ab's and feed, feed, feed

hope you feel better soon

robinpud · 18/12/2008 09:27

Had it several times, including having to call the emergency doctor out at 2am as i was delirious.
Take the antibiotics, sit on the sofa and feed.. do it for at least 3 days.

belgo · 18/12/2008 09:31

I've had mastitis four times. Three times I was able to get rid of it by feeding and massaging constantly, and taking ibruprofen for the pain and temperture.

The fourth time was much much worse and after two nights of rigors annd agonising pain I took antibiotics, and also anti thrush medication as a precaution.

MadameOvary · 18/12/2008 09:39

feed feed feed = ouch ouch ouch!
but i am doing it, and no complaints from DD.
thanks everyone .

get a hot flannel and massage your breast with it in circular motions, quite hard, I found it staved it off with me.. plus the feeding of course. hope better soon!

santasinmywaistband · 18/12/2008 12:55

Hot bath, massage and breast pump when DD is asleep

And try a ginger compress: boil root ginger in water, then soak a flannel in the water and hold the flannel against the infected breast. Do this regularly - you can use the same ginger water to re- soak the flannel, and then reheat the flannel in the microwave.

You know what is really gross? I expressed some milk last night and I was going to use it today but it had seperated and it looked like there was blood in it. Bleh. I put it in the bin.

DD had quite a nappy and I do worry about her drinking my "infected" milk (yuk, sorry if TMI)

nailpolish · 18/12/2008 18:27

didnt seem to affect her at all, dont worry about it

nailpolish · 18/12/2008 18:27

i know thats a bit TMI

sorry

daftpunk · 18/12/2008 18:30

poor you..i've had it twice...

hope you feel better soon

x

AnybodyHoHoHomeMcFly · 18/12/2008 18:32

I had this twice and it's dreadful but the ABs do clear it up pretty quickly. Def take them as if it gets worse you can get a breast abscess which can lead to deformation .

What I really found helped was a bath as hot as I could stand and then massaging the affected breast firmly towards the nip in order to try to ease the blockage. I got pretty gross stuff coming out of my boob (gone off milk?) but it def eased the rock hardness and the pain.

Poor you, do hope it clears up soon.

MadameOvary · 18/12/2008 18:41

Ok thank you. At least i have some previously expressed milk in the freezer. I have already taken two AB's.
I hate the idea that I am carrying poison around in my boob

Guadalupe · 18/12/2008 18:44

I got his repeatedly with ds2 between six and twelve months. Some of the times I avoided abs but I needed them when I got very ill.

Ibuprofen, express in the bath, cabbage, and feed feed feed. I know this is agony. Also rest as much as you can. Hope you feel better soon.

AnybodyHoHoHomeMcFly · 18/12/2008 18:46

I seem to remember something about mastitis milk not really harming baby (ABs can upset their stomachs tho) not sure where I saw it.

Hang on.... [rummages on t'internet]

There's something here but I have also seen it various places

Guadalupe · 18/12/2008 18:46

what do mean poison, from the abs or blocked up/bloody milk? You should have abs that are compatable with feeding and the advice is to feed through mastitis now, it even says to feed through an abcess on kellymom. Your baby will be fine.

MadameOvary · 19/12/2008 12:53

McFly and Guadalupe, thank you, I do have the ABs now and DD is fine

OP posts:
Guadalupe · 19/12/2008 14:01

Oh good. You should feel better fairly soon after taking them. Remember you still need to rest though.

Scarfmaker · 19/12/2008 22:02

Take the antibiotics - one of my breasts is still deformed 16 years after I had mastitis.
