My eyesight is now 20/20...without lasers!

I've worn my glasses for just over a month to let my eyes go back to 'natural' after wearing gas permeable lenses almost every day for nearly 15 years. My eyes were -5.0 and -4.5, the -5.0 had a 1.73 astigmatism too.

I wore the Ortho-k lenses for the first time on Monday night and when I had my eyes tested on Tuesday morning, they had changed to -1.25 from -4.5 and -2.25 from -5.0 (and the astigmatism was 0.29, so barely noticeable).

Wednesday, even better - could read the 20/20 line with my right eye (the one that had been -5.0) and the left eye is not far behind.

This morning, both eyes are very nearly perfect.

So, if anyone's considering laser surgery, I thought they might like to know that for some people at least, there is an option without the long-term uncertainty of laser surgery - I am SO happy with the results!

oh yes my mum gets them, from an optician in eastcote, middlesex, understand there not widely available. she raves about them, is a keen swimmer so can finally see in the pool! ...however quite a scatty woman and eyesight can slip again if you ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++forget to put them in a night. she's only been doing it a few mths so early days.

oh also took her a few weeks to be able to drive in the dark safely...halos around lights, but she says she's got used to it now!...phew.

Sounds marvellous HM, I'm v interested and will check if my optician offers them. What if you haven't worn contacts? I did for a bit, twice, but my eyes didn't adjust well, and got v dry.

HUNKERMUNKER · 24/03/2005 18:08

thefoodfighter...I can heartily recommend your mum's optician

Puff, I had dry eyes (borderline whether I could wear lenses at all when I was 14), but they've been fine.

Ok, I'm very excited!

JanH - -10 . I didn't know the scale went that far! I'm -6.25 in one eye and always thought it quite impressive that when asked which was the biggest letter I could see, couldn't actually see the board! Now realise I'm a complete amateur .

Thankfully after 26 years of wearing glasses/lenses, am still getting more shortsighted . Anyone else told that their eyes would stop changing around about the age of 18?

OOOOOHHH! Have been pointed in the direction of this thread due my own current contact lens drama! Can anyone - Hunker? - tell me if the price has come down for Ortho-K's yet??! I can't afford more than £25 a month..

Why is the cost a per month cost? Are they not like conventional lenses where you pay for the lenses and that's it (as opposed to daily wear ones where you pay on a monthly basis as you have to keep renewing them)?
