How likely is an immunised adult to catch measles?

DS has measles. I've had at least one single measles jab, and the MMR at 14. I'm starting to get a cough so wondering whether I should be avoiding socialising in case I'm incubating it.

I think it depends if their immunisation was conferred by having wild measles itself (in which case it's lifelong) or conferred by vaccination (in which case I have read that there is much more chance of the immunity wearing off). I think Jimjams has posted about this in the past?

Oh, and best wishes to DS - hope he feels better soon!

Thanks SSB. DS is (touch wood) only mildly affected.

I would say that until you know otherwise you have to assume that you might at least be carrying it and therefore could infect others.

Even if you are still covered by your jabs I believe it is possible to have a mild case or even a subclinical case. In both of these scenarios you are still a carrier.

Glad to hear your DS seems to be getting through it ok.

It is good if you supplement measles cases with vitamin A, just don't go overboard.

thanks beachcomber. I had a quick look at the vit a issue - as DS is not particularly unwell with it, I'm more inclined to look for a multivit than to dose him with it for the mo.

it is perfectly possible for it to have worn off, or lost some of its effectiveness.
although if you had it at 14 then I think it's "likely" that you are still covered.

personally I would just be aware that you could have it, and act accordingly

I had all the jabs and contracted german measles at 16 - then full blown chicken pox at the age of 34! So anything is possible

Well I was a good girl and sacked off my book club Xmas dinner! Oh well, fingers crossed. That's pretty bad about the rubella - as I guess you would have had rubella jab as a teen. My mum has confirmed that I have had 2 single measles jabs and 1 MMR - so I would have to be pretty unlucky.....
