not sure whether this should be in pregnancy or childbirth so thought I'd put it here. I'm a namechanger, for obvious, embarrasing reasons.

I had a baby six weeks ago and towards the end of my pregnancy I noticed that I was losing pubic hair . It has carried on post partum and the hair is very brittle; when I wipe I get lots of little short bits of hair on the paper, like it is breaking off. It's also lost its (feel free to add a comma if required curl .

I've also noticed that if I ruffle through it (don't laugh please this is embarrassing enough ), I lose lots of little short bits as well.

Today I noticed that my armpits are almost bald and I certainly haven't shaved them since DS was born. I've been too knackered with the baby to worry about hairy pits, but thought I should have a tidy up as I'm restarting swimming with my toddler this week, and DH is making demands as well. I'm not sure I want him anywhere near by balding, shedding parts.

I've googled but not much is coming up except perhaps thyroid problems, but surely the hair on my head would be affected as well? And, my thyroid function was tested at about 30 weeks pregnant and was fine.

Has anyone had similar problems and if so what was the outcome/diagnosis? I feel a bit embarrassed to tell the doctor about it.

I've heard about this (I think it's quite common) & seem to remember that it's to do with anaemia?

Myrrhcy · 15/12/2008 16:04

My body hair seems to have more or less disappeared too (still have plenty of pubes though)

I found during both pregnancies that my body hair became very scant, but since the birth of my second child (nearly 5 years ago!) it still hasn't returned to normal growth. Tbh, it hasn't occured to me so speak to anyone about it.

devoutsceptic · 15/12/2008 16:05

Well, it could by thyroid. Hair loss with thyroid can be quite odd - outer third of eybrows very typical. But hair shedding is generally normal post-pregnancy.

FannyWig · 15/12/2008 16:05

thanks; that would make sense in my case. My iron levels were very low post birth (8.2) and I was borderline whether they would transfuse as I was fainting and short of breath. I've been taking spatone as the iron tablets they prescribed were making me hideously constipated, but stopped it as I felt fine amaemia-wise.

This isn't like normal post pregnancy shedding. At least it's not like anything I had with my older two DCs.....and it started with my pubes in the last trimester of my pregnacy.

Could it be hormonal?

I've just noticed what your name change is (sorry)

I wonder what it is in my case then?

FannyWig · 15/12/2008 16:14

well, you gotta laugh don't you?

I'm going to have to talk to the doctor aren't I? It's definately not normal.

My leg hair barely grew while pregnant. And I didn't really have the whacking great hair growth lots of women have, in fact, it sort of stopped growing for a few months. Mentioned it to GP and she said it was normal, it's your body conserving energy for the pregnancy.
But pubic hair falling out?
Go to GP.

FannyWig · 15/12/2008 19:32

6 week check on Wednesday. Will pluck (no pun intended ) up the courage to talk to him about it.

ROFL at "pluck up the courage"

Let us know what GP says, k?

honestfriend · 15/12/2008 22:58

I reckon it's hormonal. Good luck.

honestfriend · 15/12/2008 22:59
