Cervical - Ovarian Cancer - Could I have it?

Hi All,

I went to see my GP on Friday following intermitent spells or dark brown clots of blood being lost over the last 6 months. have also had a lot of back pain, and some bloody in discharge which has been more like mucus than discharge. When she examined me she found a lump in my cervix. I am quite worried. I have been told to go to the hospital for a ultrasound and blood tests, i went today and had the blood tests and the ultrasound has been booked for tomorrow. I was just wondering if anyone else has suffered these symptoms and what was the outcome? I would greatly appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

ovenbunny1 - I haven't had any specific experience - although a few abnormal smears in past and a bit of irregular beeding last year - had ultrasound etc , all fine. Just wanted to wish you well though - can feel your worry just from your post . You're obviously having all the right things done - so I hope everything works out OK. Hopefully you'll get some replies from others who may have experienced something similar. Best wishes x

Pushki
Thank you soo much for your reply.

I am quite worried but think maybe I am being dramatic and worrying about nothing, it concerns me more that my GP found it (saw it and felt it) than it was something I had found (like others i seen to google etc. Thought the GP would just send me home (re the bleeding) and tell me not to worry, instead she seemed worried!

I look at my DD and DS and DH and try not to worry them, one minute I am fine and think dont be silly, next its what if?

Guess its all normal and nothing I can do until I get the answers, but also wonder how long answers may take to come, when they do the ultrasound will they tell me if they suspect anything or will it all be a waiting game and if so how long? Is it a short wait for bad news? If its a long wait is it good news?

Anyway will keep you updated and like you say, I hope anyone else with similar experience can also reply be it good or bad any help is appreciated.

Thanks again pushki x

I've yet to get my results back for my tests but I had same sort of issues as you. Was sent for a colposcopy and had 3 biopsies taken (5 weeks ago, hoping for results this week). While being examined was told I also had a lump which was a cyst. According to the nurse these are perfectly normal and easy to remove, they can sometimes bleed. Hope this helps....

Santaswhiskey · 08/12/2008 19:20

Meant to say that what I have been telling myself is that I have had regular smear tests so if there is anything there, it'll be very very early days. Try not to let your mind wander. I assume the worry is the speed things happened. Try to think sensibly and rationally. Like you, I was at the GP's on the Friday and in hospital on the Monday. Keep calm, think positive.

ovenbunny1 · 08/12/2008 19:26

OMG! Santaswhiskey, that is so very reassuring. Fingers crossed for you that it will all be ok, you would think if there was a problem 5 weeks would be a long time? Its a really long time to worry for too isnt it?

I hope it all goes ok for you, please keep in touch and let me know how it all goes for you xxx

I was told results would take 4-6 weeks! The waiting has made me evaluate everything leading up to the test and I have convinced myself that even if it is bad news, it will have been caught extremely early.

I know you must be worried but when you go for your ultrasound, ask lots and lots of questions, that way you won't be searching for your answers on the internet - very dangerous.

Good Luck again
x

Will they tell me what they think it is at the ultrasound, or will I have to wait for them to send their findings to my GP?

When I had my ultrasound last year - the person doing it did say afterwards that she hadn't seen anything abnormal but that I would have to wait for the official report. But that will probably vary between different people doing it - so don't get worried if they won't tell you - doesn't mean there's something wrong necessarily, just good practice probably to wait for it to be reported on. I think the report took 7 - 10 days. Good luck with it x

ovenbunny1 · 09/12/2008 10:26

Hi pushki,

Thank you for that, hopefully they will tell me the same. Wonder what they say if they do suspect anything?

I have examined myself and found 2 small lumps, but I guess it could be any number of things and lumps come and go all the time.

Anyway, Ultrasound is at 4pm so will report back late when I get home. My Sister in law is looking after my toddlers for me and she is making me some dinner so I will at least have an adult to come home and talk to. DH is working late.

Thanks again. Fingers crossed! xxx

Hi ovenbunny1, when you say about lumps, that reminded me that years ago when I had some treatment for abnormal cervical cells they referred to the area as a lump - which terrified me at the time! I was only 22 and it was only by chance that I went to register with a new GP who said I should have a smear as I'd never had one before. Then found I had abnormal smear and pre-cancerous cells - but had some treatment and although a few abnormal smears after - have been fine since and that is 20 years ago now.

Mention to the ultrasonogropher what you have felt - as they will make sure they look at that area fully. you're bound to feel nervous and not the most pleasant examination! Let us know later how you got on x

elsiepiddock · 09/12/2008 11:25

Hi Ovenbunny1, just to let you know, I have a lump on my cervix which is a harmless polyp - have had it for years.
Try not to worry - it's likely to be something harmless.

ovenbunny1 · 09/12/2008 12:14

Thank you pushki and elsiepiddock.

I also think maybe its just something harmless and I am getting a het up about nothing.

When the GP felt the lump she wrote on the form that it was a Palpable midline mass, and also a Palpable Cervical Mass (not sure what either of these phases means really!)

I can only imagine the Radiologist saying that its all clear and he/she cannot see anything, but at the same time am imagining all sorts of things naturally.

Guess I wont know till I go so speculation on my part is futile. Will keep you informed.

Thanks again xxxx

Palpable just means she can feel it. Mass means basically a lump. She is just writing in medical jargon what she said to you - that she felt a lump on your cervix.

ovenbunny1 · 10/12/2008 08:37

Hi All,

Well I had the Ultrasound done but she only did a pelvic ultrasound, it wasnt transvaginal and she didnt scan my abdomen (which the GP had requested). I forgot to ask any questions as I was just so anxious and bursting for the toilet, I was there on my own and was just a complete bag or nerves.

I wasnt given any results as such but she said ok thats fine and she couldnt see where the bleeding was coming from so presumably thats good and means its all clear.

Now need to wait for results of the blood test and hope they are all normal and then my scare will be all over (although guess my brown lumps must be coming from somewhere?). Hopefully blood tests will all be fine, if not I guess I may need some other sort of scan instead.

But fingers crossed, feel like a new woman today and that I have the all clear already, which I think I have but am not sure?

Santaswhiskey, have you got your results yet?

Yes got them this morning. Positive (i.e. good) result here. Biopsy showed inflamed granulation tissue and minor abnormality of cells. Basically just means annual smears for a few years. Am rather relieved.

Keep us informed of your results

ovenbunny1 · 10/12/2008 12:14

Got mine just now, all normal! Phew!!!

Thank you to everyone for the excellent advice and support.
