Hair around nipples?

Pregapuss · 07/12/2008 21:44

I have really thick hair on my boobs, around my nipples. Really thick, dark hair. Really embarrassing. I used to pluck it out but as it was so painful and time consuming I started to shave it but obviously this makes it worse in the long run.

Feel a bit like a freak with it to be honest and no idea what to do. I have never told anybody.

Pregapuss are you pregnant?
Is it something you have always had and getting worse or something new?

Do you have any other symptoms?

This is highly indicative of hormonal imbalances, I would have a blood test done to see what your hormone levels are like. A blood test should be done anyway to see whether there are problems with your thyroid and or a condition called polycsytic ovarian syndrome (as this can also cause a degree of hirsuitism) Do see your GP in any case.

I have a bit of dark hair around my nipples and it's because I have PCOS. I also have a friend with the same for the same reason. You aren't a freak, I promise It's probably worth going to your GP just to get it checked though and have them put your mind at rest.

What is PCOS? I have had it for a few years, but I am only 21 so maybe it came in late puberty? Not sure really, can't really remember as it started off with the odd one or 2. I am pregant, but this is my second baby and I had it before I got pregnant the first time. I think it is worse in pregnancy though.

If I go to the doctors, will I need to let it grow for a bit first to show her? I would hate to have to let it grow but then wouldn't want her not to be able to see. I would be really embarrassed about going as it is.

Excess hair is a sign of polycystic ovaries which is were there are small cysts growing on them, but you clearly have no problem getting pregnant.
Don't be embarassed about going to the doctors, they have seen it all before and worse.
I'd let it grow a bit so they can see what it's like.
If you decide to carry on how you are with home removal, can you use hair removal creams instead of shaving and plucking? Not sure if safe in pregnancy though

You probably wouldn't need to show her as I imagine she would trust you when you tell her. Do you also have excess hair on your face? Another possible indicator of PCOS can be excess weight.

Please don't worry about PCOS if that is what it is. I think the main problem for a lot of people is having difficult getting pregnant (Believe this was the case for Jamie Oliver's wife) but that clearly isn't the case with you

I had irregular periods for about a year when I was 24 and it was when investigating this that I mentioned the excess hair and they did a scan and some blood tests which confirmed it was likely to be PCOS. Anyway fast forward several years and I got pregnant the first month of trying! So for me, the only real problem with PCOS is the excess hair and being slightly overweight, but I think being overweight is more to do with my chocolate and cake habit than hormones

Funny you should say that, I have always had VERY irregular periods, even when on the pill.

Def not having problems getting pregnant, quite the opposite in fact. This is the second unplanned pregnancy in 2 years with DD I was on the pill and with this one I was on the mini pill and still breastfeeding my 6 month old!!

I don't particually have extra hair on my face. I do have a bit of light hair on my top lip etc but nothing particuly noticeable.

I do also have a bit of a problem with weight, but that might be more pregnancy related. I was actually going to get tested for gestational diabeties because I have put on so much weight dspite not eating more than most people and I walk most days and I am active during the day with an 11 month old and I childmind.
