Apprehensive about optician appt

I'm hoping that by posting I can make some of my fears go away!

I've got a history of eye problems and eye surgery but hoped it had settled down. Past few weeks I've been noticing the vision in one eye seems to becoming a bit cloudy. I've been trying to put it down as tiredness/stress/winter lighting but I'm a bit worried I've been deluding myself.

I've an urgent appt tomorrow afternoon. I'm really scared that they will tell me its not imaginings and that I'll need to go back to eye hosp for more surgery. Last time it was truely horrid and I'm not sure if I've got the courage to do it again.

so happy thoughts please.

Kitten what do think it might be?

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 07/12/2008 21:04

My symptoms are very similar to when the lens capsule opacified following cataract surgery.

I had two attempts with laser (the first was very traumatic when she damaged the lens and ran out to get advice leaving me alone and terrified then she decided it was too difficult and abandoned the op) the second one took much much longer than usual and the surgeon told me how difficult it was due to the kind of lens I have. I was so scared the whole time.

I'm concerned that sometimes the procedure does need doing again. I can't face it again. Run out of coping with it.

Kitten, normally capsular opacification only happens once in each eye, so highly unlikely that that's what it is. It could be as simple as a change in prescription. Is the vision blurred both at distance and at near?

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 07/12/2008 22:44

It is - I can't find any distance at which I can focus clearly, my vision feels like I'm looking through something - I've got multifocal lenses. Had my eyes checked in the summer so I hope my eyes arent changing that rapidly.

oh no kitten, was hoping that this wasn't you when I saw the thread title

shall send you positive thoughts all afternoon in hope it helps

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 07/12/2008 22:50

thank you dizzy. I expect I'm working myself up about nothing, it is probably just tiredness or something but I guess I've got to be adult about it and get it checked, pretending all is well probably isn't the best idea.
Its nice to know someone will be thinking good thoughts I've not had the courage to admit my concerns to friends cos I don't want them looking at me with that worried look they get.

dizzyjingles · 07/12/2008 22:56

well am peering into the screen with concern but only in a good way and hope it IS just tiredness - I always say you do too much lady!

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 07/12/2008 23:02

noooo, don't look concerned!!! look reassuring!!!!
dh says the same so I've cut back a lot and from this week it should be quite a bit less hectic. It would be nice if I wasnt a ratty old bag for Christmas

dizzyjingles · 07/12/2008 23:08

I am thoroughly reassured that your DH has a handle on the situation and you will be perfectly fine tomorrow and relaxed in time for christmas

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 07/12/2008 23:10

lol!!!!

And with that I ought to go to bed so the optician doesnt have to look around the matchsticks. Thanks BALD and Dizzy.

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 08/12/2008 11:16

thanks dizzy
technically I'm doing housework this morning but I can't concentrate on it so I'm doing anything but!

OP posts:
dizzyjingles · 08/12/2008 11:17

am also doing 'housework' but my youngest two have coughs and sniffles and are being a bit needy

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 08/12/2008 11:18

thats hard work! I hope they feel better soon.

Perhaps one way round the housework dilemma is just to shove up loads of christmas decs so no one can see any surfaces.

DaidiNaNollag · 08/12/2008 13:50

That's how I do it, Kitten!
Best of luck this morning, let us know how it goes!

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 08/12/2008 15:02

I'm back
The really good news is that from the opticians point of view theres no measurable change - hooray!

She thinks its that I'm having trouble coordinating my vision at the moment - I've got a different multifocal implant in each eye and cos I'm run down and my arthritis has been flaring its just generally harder for me to cope with my eyesight atm. She also took photos of my retinas and showed me how much general debris there is in my eyes which was interesting.

I also personally think that the low light levels at this time of year don't help at all as one of the implants is pupil size dependent.

But, no need for a referral to hospital which is fantastic - I can go for reassurance if I want (which I don't feel the need for now)

Time for a very rapid celebratory cup ot tea

Thank you for your support all

great news kitten, am delighted

DaidiNaNollag · 08/12/2008 23:41

Great news, Kitten! Didn't realise you had multifocal implants. They can be a bit dodgy all right in that they haven't yet invented a perfect one! And any differences between the two eyes can cause problems with perception initially.

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 09/12/2008 11:23

I am very fortunate to have them (and on the nhs too) the surgeon certainly did his best for me but its never going to replace nature!
He chose one that works better for distance and one that is better for close but my eyes are drifting a bit myopic again (and what with pvds in both eyes and yag) its all being a bit challenging. But there again, I had cataracts despite being in my 30's and years ago it would have been a much duller future.

Kitten - so pleased for you that it wasn't as bad as expected ....

superdenki · 10/12/2008 15:45

just read this thread and wanted to say glad things are okay, my sight problems are nowhere near as serious as yours but it's so worrying. i had retinal detachment surgery in march and although i have now been discharged from the eye hospital i'm always on the lookout for something going wrong, particularly now i'm pregnant. I think the winter light really doesn't help does it. all the best.

OhYouMerryMerryKitten · 10/12/2008 22:12

thanks superdenki - retinal detachment is no picnic its something I've been told to watch out for.

It is a constant worry isn't it. My optician told me that even when discharged often if you phone up the surgeons secretary they will see you if you are worried. Don't be scared of bothering them if you are worried.
