Anyone had problems having a Mirena coil put in?

Went to have my Mirena fitted yesterday. Was bloody awful. GP had problems seeing my cervix to begin with. Finally mamaged to find it and couldn't get the coil in because i have a lot of scar tissue on my cervix from having colposcopy years ago.

Has referred me to family planning to have a local anasthetic (sp) put into my cervix and dilators etc to have it put in. I am now shitting myself

Will it be worth doing i ask myself???

Has anyone here had the same kind of problems and how was it for you when you got it done?

Thanks

Having had a copper coil fitted a couple of weeks ago after endless referrals between my GP and specialist who has done my several colposcopys/loop excisions because GP wasnt sure about the state of my cervix and scar tissue ect...

Long story short - GP finally had the go ahead but it turned slightly nightmarish as it was painfull and I went into cervical shock - GP said probably due to my cervix being that bit more sensitive. All ok now but had a bit of a weird/heavy feeling for a few days afterwards.

But I would imagine if you are having a local anastheic you should be fine as you wont feel a thing - only the administering of the local then after that it should be a breeze.(hopefully)

Agal, I haven't had colposcopy or anything but my GP was poking away for ages and couldn't get the mirena in at all so I went to family planning and it was honestly a piece of cake for them. They are far more used to "difficult" insertions there. Are you going to Dean Terrace?

nailpolish · 03/12/2008 15:45

hi agal
i have a copper coil and it was put in no probs

my first reaction is that your gp doesnt do many coil insertions and you need someone who is more experienced - family planning is MUCH better in terms of experience

id go for it if i were you

(have you thought of copper coil? none of those horrid artificial hormones)

nailpolish · 03/12/2008 15:46

oh i used to work at Dean Terrace!!
lovely place

liath · 03/12/2008 15:47

Really Nailpolish? I still do the odd shift there - it's a great place to work isn't it?

nailpolish · 03/12/2008 15:49

yes i wish i could go back there
it was in 1992 when i was a student
really nice part of town - great places to get lunch!

aGalChangedHerName · 03/12/2008 16:43

Yes i am going to Dean Terrace so thats good that there are good stories about it

Naily i have always been fine on the pill etc so wanted to see if i would be lucky and it may stop my periods altogether.

I need to do something I am still having my period every 2ish weeks.

You two looking forward to the meet up then? (NP and Liath)

Thanks Ruby,i felt an uncomfortable sensation but didn't find it painful at all so the GP said i would be ok with getting it in at Dean Terrace. She tried for ages and was certainly poking around a fair bit lol. Thanks again x

yep! it took 4 goes for mine - 2 at gp's, 1 with local at specialist - believe me, the injections didn't hurt, then I went in for a general to get it done - best thing! No AF now and so much better.

nailpolish · 03/12/2008 18:20

i am really looking forward to night oot

agal i hope coil insertion goes ok - you will love it!

when is appt

aGalChangedHerName · 03/12/2008 18:48

Not sure NP,Gp has just referred me so god knows how long i will wait.

I have had an injection in my cervix before when i had colcoscopy treatment and it was fine so not worried about that. Glad it worked well for you Bramble.

Just hoping i don't have my period on the night out NP Knowing my luck i flipping will!!

yep i prob will too agal
bloated and spotty too no doubt! (me that is)

erm i was wondering why you were getting the coil - i thought your dh had the snip - is it for your periods? poor you i flippin hate the buggers

aGalChangedHerName · 04/12/2008 14:56

yes for my periods He has had the snip so GP said it might take a bit longer to get an appt at Dean Terrace. You get an appt quicker if it is for contraception and not a medical reason IYSWIM?

Ach well a few gins and i'll be fine i dare say lol
