DS (3yo) and i were being monsters today and he opened his mouth really wide. When i looked closely his tonsils are huge. They touch each other and look spotty
I asked him if it hurts and he's eating and drinking normally, but i'm not sure if i should be worried or not

Any advice welcome

My ds2 had huge tonsils - never seemed to get infected, but they (and his adenoids) did seem to affect his speech and sleep (he would snore terribly and wake himself up all the time).

I really debated whether to see the GP about it, and finally this year got him referred to an ENT consultant. Who took one look and said they had to come out straight away, mainly due to the sleep issue.

They were out 10 days later and we've noticed a huge improvement in his speech and sleeping. He's 4. Worth getting checked out I would say.

hi Wendy, my 3yo's are huge too. ENT specialist said only a problem if they get recurrent infections and are pitted/infected. I would get the 'spottiness' checked out just to be sure. Apparently as children grow the tonsils dont much so relatively they become much smaller in their mouths.

Thanks girls, i'll book an appointment for next week just to get them checked.

My doctor pointed out to me once that my tonsils are huge, this was during my appointments regarding my breast reduction. I'm not sure whether there is any corrlelation .

My 2 yr old dd's tonsils touch in the middle - she has dreadful sleep apnoea, though doesn't actually wake herself up, just very noisy and disturbed sleep. ENT specialist is taking them out, along with adenoids, in January - then again, she has a floppy larynx which means she already has a narrow airway, not sure how much difference that makes (she's growing out of that one).

I read somewhere that tonsils are largest in relation to airways between 3-6 yrs of age, so that would be the time of concern, I suppose, if there is any??
