Hi mands1 - I dont really have much advice. I have always heard myself to avoid dairy when having diarrhoea or any kind of sickness. I've never heard anything of the opposite. Hope your dh gets well soon.

ds had a bad bout of d&v about a month ago - bad enough for us to take him to the GP on Sunday evening when even his milk was being brought up - the GP said to avoid milk as the* enzyms needed to digest the sugars in milk are destroyed during a bout of diarrhoea and therefore milk is exacerbating the problem.

*(and this is a rough translation by someone without an education in biochemistry who was very worried when the matter was discussed and thereofre may not have absorbed the finer points)

We gave ds a re-hydrating drink (can be bought over the counter) and he brightened up very quckly and the d&v cleared soon after. HTH

Do you know approx how long you should wait after bout of diahorrea / gastro problems before reintroducing diary?

Janeway · 14/03/2003 07:33

reager- GP advised no milk till 24hrs after d&v stops

Even breast milk?
DS2 has wild-shites too. I breast-feed him to sleep in the middle of the night, so no milk will = no sleep. Aarghhhhh!

My 10 month old DS had D&V about a month ago too - yuk! Dairy food generally is best avoided & even though I knew this I did give my DS some dairy things (yoghurt, macaroni cheese) & he was then sick. However, I found DS was still keen on having formula morning & night, so my GP said to make it half strength until he starts to get better & DS managed to keep his formula down. The GP also said to give him ice cream if he'll eat it as he said there was hardly any dairy product in ice cream!!!! - it's mostly vegetable fat and a good way to get calories into him (as other than his formula, he wasn't eating much). I didn't give him ice cream, but have since looked at the ice cream in the shops & the cheaper stuff does contain lots of non diary stuff.

I have also read that breastmilk is okay to give when they have sickness/diarrhoea as there are antibodies in the milk that can help fight off the bugs - DS did have sickness once when he was in the early stages of weaning (I got it as well!) & as I was still breastfeeding I carried on giving him breast milk & he didn't suffer with any further sickness, so maybe there is some truth in that.
