Crippling Heartburn. URGENT HELP PLEASE

please please help me. I have the most horrific heartburn that has me literally curled up, thinking i might be sick . It burns/hurts in my oesophagus somewhere and the pain is dire. I've not had this since i was pregnant with dd (she's now 15months)

in desperation i dug out some old gaviscon which i had during my pregnancy and drank the curdled congealed stuff. it helped a bit, but there was only a teaspoon full and i need more.

i have baby gaviscon which dd used to use, can i do something with this? mix it with water?

please dont tell me to drink milk, that really would make me sick.

any help so so so sooo gratefully received.

Please phone NHS 24, dontbite.

Tonight, raise the top of your bed by putting books or something under the top feet and sleep with an extra pillow.
Gaviscon Advance is a great relief when heartburn gets this bad but please speak to a doctor.

I hope you feel better soon.

Are you sure it's heartburn and not gallstones? I had my gallbladder removed recently after suffering horrific pains which I thought were indigestion/heartburn but turned out to be gallstones.

I was literally curled up on the floor struggling to breathe - ended up in A&E as DH phoned an ambulance in a panic!

Don't want to worry/scare you, but it might be worth getting checked out - I had 2 or 3 episodes a few months apart, which were put down to heartburn/indigestion, but looking back I realise it was gallstones.

I hope it improves soon!

oh no!!! i'm pretty sure its only heartburn because of the amount of delicious lovely gorgeous food crap i have eaten today!

but i will keep an eye on it, thank you.

Oh noooo, I didn't want to scare you, it's just that the docs said it's more common in women who've recently had babies (my DS is 16mo).

If the gaviscon gets rid of it, then you're OK

dontbitemytoes · 01/12/2008 20:44

gaviscon all gone, except the baby stuff, which i don't know how to take cos its in powder format, otherwise i would have taken the lot by now!! Am not scared, just a bit surprised, expected tales of horror, but not operation type horrors!! will watch out though, thank you ;)

I was all worried for you as it sounded like a wicked bout of heartburn I had after ds2 was born. (which was an ulcerated oesophagus)

Sorry if you got a fright.

If push comes to shove, a teaspoonful of bicarb in water, then some yoghurt can soothe it a little .

tissy · 01/12/2008 21:18

bland food- mashed potato, ice dream, rich tea biscuits, toast.

This will mop up the acid in your stomach

dontbitemytoes · 01/12/2008 21:20

oh thank you gentleotter, it has calmed down so i'm hoping its going to pass, without the need for baby gaviscon!!

have just had bicarb in water and sitting bolt upright, which is how i might have to spend the night!!

loving your ideas tissy. you know the way to make me happy ;)

I spent pretty much all of my pregnancy with reflux, which failed to go away when dd was born. I live with it all the time!

Other things- raise head of bed.

Eat sitting at a table, not on a tray on your knee

Avoid tight clothes, belts, even bras, my heartburn is MUCH better if I undo my bra!

Little and often for meals, no long gaps.

Don't bend unless absolutely necessary.

You can safely quadruple the dose of Gaviscon- I drink 20 ml at a time before bed!

Zantac is fine in pg, my OB recommended maximum dose (I have a hiatus hernia from my first pg). You can get it over the counter.

Heartburn is the pits, hope you get some relief!
