Does anyone know what your blood pressure should ideally be and when you should worry?

I'm sure I used to know this but the nugget of info has been lost in the dusty corners of my mind!

I've just taken my BP and the systollic figure seems to be quite high, but I can't remember what the 'normal' range is.

Does anyone have any idea?
Thanks

This might help here

AMumInScotland · 01/12/2008 13:26

I think it depends on your age, as the "normal" range is higher as you get older. I know mine tends to be about 110 to 120 over 60 to 70, which is lowish normal for a creaky 41 year old like me...

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 01/12/2008 13:27

average bp is 120/80

the 1st figure (systolic) is allowed to be a bit higher than that but would be concerned if it was over 140

the 2nd figure (diastolic) is actually more an indicator of concern, do you know what figure that was ?

ChristmassyCullenHasMySanta · 01/12/2008 13:28

Thanks girlandboy.
According to that my systolic is up but my distolic is normal.
Wonder what on earth that means?!

sorry, double post

ChristmassyCullenHasMySanta · 01/12/2008 13:29

Oh dear then!
Mine appears to be 144 / 81.
I'm 34.
Is this a time to worry or just keep an eye on it then?

Dh has high bp so I do have some experience. The first figure is not quite so vitaland does tend to increase with age. The second figure is far more important. 80 is normal, 90s is cause for concern and reqires monitoring and over a hundred is dangerous. When dh's problem first came to light it was at a routine "well man" check at work. It was 140/110 and he was completely symptomless.

ChristmassyCullenHasMySanta · 01/12/2008 13:40

Thank you Kiddiz, as it's the systolic that seems high I won't worry too much then!
I have a GP appointment later in the week anyway so I guess I'll just monitor it.
It's good to now that it's the diastolic I have to keep an eye on.

CCHSM, how/where was your BP measured ?

If it was a home device, I wouldn't be too concerned but might book in with your GP practice nurse to get it re-checked.

If it was measured by a health professional, then I would assume if there was a cause for concern they would have discussed it with you.

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 01/12/2008 13:43

ah sorry, cross post

sounds like a good plan

ChristmassyCullenHasMySanta · 01/12/2008 13:46

Yes AFFAMP, it's a dreaded home device (usually a very accurate one though as I have had to keep a close eye on my bP in the past and this was recommended to me!)

not slagging the home devices CCHSM, they have their place of course

they are just not the same as being checked out by a health prof

ChristmassyCullenHasMySanta · 01/12/2008 13:56

Yep, I agree, often think I should never check myself (who's to say I'm even doing it correctly!)
Mind you, at least this way I'm not having to go to the GP every 3 days I suppose!!
Will be interesting to see what she says on Friday - or if the BP is even vaguely the same.

My dh has a home bp monitor and he took it with him to the gp so they could check the readings against theirs. The practice nurse suggested this so he could keep an eye on his bp at home and know how accurate his monitor was.
Good idea to get your bp checked by your gp though.
