thrush

Arrrghhh... I have thrush again. Have tried the cream which you inject up your fanjo, and the cream you apply daily but it seems to be having little effect. The advice is to wear cotton knickers and avoid tights and tight trousers, but in this weather it's really not likely I am going to be airing my fanjo all day long while I am at work.

What should I do? If I go to the doctors will they just keep giving me the creams?

beanie i had thrush probably for a few months and i used the pessary on saturday night, using the cream that came with it, and i now have no symptoms at all, i got given the pessary by the midwives at the hospital when i was pregnant the first time and the second time i got it from the dr and a midwife, it doesnt effect pregnancy, now i get bad thrush about every 6 months and the only way to get rid is with the pessary.

hiya Coochy - I've been trying for just over a year.

I have woken up this morning with stoomach ache, the shits and my foof is still red raw and burning. When I woke up I was convinced my period had started as I was so moist but it was either sweat or discharge. It really hurts when I pee (stinging as the pee splashes my vulva- not cystitis) and my bum is also red raw.

On top of that I can't see my doctor until Tuesday. If I am still in pain tomorrow then I will just call and ask to see any doctor I can.

When you need to pee take a jug of warm water in with you and pour over your foof whilst peeing. It will help stop the soreness.
I think you need to call your gp today and get an emergency appointment tbh. You are getting worse and the discomfort must be pretty awful by now.

In the meantime don't use anything other than plain water to clean, have a shower twice a day if you can just to rinse off the area with plain water, ie when you get up and before bed.

Hope you feel better soon. x

I suffered on and off with this for years then following a friend's recommendation I went to see a nutritionist who devised a diet for me (which if I recall was basically low carb/sugar)plus a couple of supplements to take - one was garlic I think and the other a probiotic. It took a couple of weeks to start having an effect but it worked brilliantly and (touch wood) 7 years later has never come back!!!! - might be worth a try. There are also various books around (try amazon) that talk about diet etc too. The creams/pessaries etc are really just treating the symptoms and not the cause iyswim.

beanieb · 03/12/2008 11:35

Thanks

I think I should drink less wine

I am in no pain or discomfort unless I pee or get up after sitting for a long time.

ok - there is no itching now, but my vulva is red raw and painful. I have been pouting warm water over me as I pee but my tmi alert bum hole is also raw as I have had the runs all day.

OUCH OUCH OUCH !!!! I feel SO sorry for you. Hope you feel better soon.

BecauseImWorthIt · 03/12/2008 20:13

What are you eating? You need to cut out as many carbs as you possibly can, especially sugar.

Don't take Actimel drinks as they are full of sugar, but go to a good health food shop and get some Acidophilus - it should be kept in the fridge.

Try using some live yoghurt and apply that to your sore bits.

I have suffered for years on and off (thankfully more off recently!)

Hope it gets better soon.

FrayedKnot · 03/12/2008 20:16

Beanieb, when I get thrush, it sometimes gets this bad

When it gets so severe I don;t find the creams or pessaries do anything at all.

Last time, some lovely MNers recommended the oral tablet, which I got oTC, and within 48 hours, it was gone

Other things which have helped me:

Having a warm but not boiling bath with tea tree in

Stop eating anything with yeast in and cut down generally to avoid further attacks (including wine I'm afraid!)

Take a good quality probiotic (the sort you have to keep in the fridge).

BecauseImWorthIt · 03/12/2008 20:32

And if you're not pregnant and can take it, go and get some Diflucan - or rather, ask for the Boots/Tesco equivalent as it's much cheaper. It really should help.

And definitely make sure that your DH uses some Canesten cream on his willy as well.

beanieb · 04/12/2008 09:52

thanks everyone. I am off to see the doc today though I am now feeling a lot better. I had a salt bath lastnight and then aired myself for ages. Am going to take in a urine sample and ask them to test it and give me a swab as i have suffered so much from Cystitis, thrush and a pain in my kidneys which meant a referral to the urology dept at the hospital so I just want them to make sure none of these things are connected.

Just to be on the safe side, please google 'lichen sclerosis' and check the symptoms against your own. Have a look 'downstairs' with a mirror too. The 'paper cuts' and welts are typical.

This is a nasty disease which needs to be caught early (mine wasn't, and I won't bore you with the consequences). GPs often don't know about it, so take some info with you if you decide to ave it checked out.

Good luck.

beanieb · 04/12/2008 11:50

hiya - thank you though I haven't had any white blisters so I am hoping this isn't what I have!

The Dr didn't examine me but is arranging blood tests and urine tests so here's hoping it will all be sorted. He also prescribed the oral thrush pill.

OP posts:
trixiethepixie · 04/12/2008 12:12

The oral thrush pill is the only thing that works for me - and I'm a frequent sufferer myself. Mine is hormone related though. The doctor is probably checking for diabetes as this can cause bouts of thrush but I dare say the ABs you've ben taking have knocked your system out.

beanieb · 04/12/2008 12:41

trixiethepixie, when you say hormone related what do you mean?

I have terrible PMT - in that I get very emotional rather than getting pains - and am about to get my period. Would it be possible that these things are related?

OP posts:
trixiethepixie · 04/12/2008 12:50

I mean every month before my period, about a week before, I get thrush. This only started after having ds for some reason and is def thrush as the doctor has tested. Originally I was on the pill after having him and was ok but had to come off it. I think my hormones are all over the place since having ds and keeping my fingers crossed they will settle down as it gets me down having it every month.

I also get really bad PMT.

beanieb · 04/12/2008 12:52

I am going to change my diet, give up the wine and eat less bread just to see how it effects me

I know how much it can get you down and hope you start to feel a bit better Trixie

OP posts:
TheProvincialLady · 04/12/2008 12:53

Yes they could be related. I am 37 weeks pregnant and the extra hormones have made me very swollen, sore and itchy. It has been unbearable at times I did have thrush a few times and it cleared up with the pessary, but the last few weeks it has just been hormone related.

If it is hormone related there are some things that help:

  1. Bicarb of soda in the bath - brings back your pH levels to normal.
  2. Lidocaine gel - to numb the pain and itching. I used bonjela teething gel would you believe and it burns like hell fire for about 10 seconds, then complete relief for 3 hours. It has given my skin a chance to heal, especially at night when I was scratching without realising.
beanieb · 04/12/2008 12:58

thanks TheProvincialLady, I'll give those a go. Swelling is so much better today though going for a wee still fills me with dread.

OP posts:
trixiethepixie · 04/12/2008 13:08

Thanks beanieb. Have made an appt at the docs for next week to see if he can do anything. I find the tablet usually clears it up totally in about three days and by tomorrow it won't feel half as sore.

Never had the nerve to do it myself but heard vinegar can balance the ph levels as candida thrives in alkaline environments.

ProvincialLady Now I know what to do all the leftover bonjela lying around the house

TheProvincialLady · 04/12/2008 13:13

The bicarb doesn't sting or anything. I have been having a bath with it every day.

I can't believe I am putting bonjela on my bits but oh, the relief Luckily I only need to do it last thing at night to get me through the small hours.

beanieb · 04/12/2008 13:24

Just wanted to say thanks for everyone who put up with my moaning in this thread. Hasn't helped the pain of course but it's been good to moan like mad about it and thanks for not giving me a slap when I was at my most moany!

OP posts:
ClausImWorthIt · 04/12/2008 19:31

Don't worry - those of us who are fellow sufferers know what pain it is.

Hope it clears up soon!

buy 2 capsules, have one yourself and give the other to your DP/DH. Wash all your underwear in non-bio, don't wear synthetic fibres close to your fango and avoid nookey for a week, then you'll be ok. Chances are that your DP/DH has it and you keep catching it back off him.
