Just given small dose of Calpol to 4 week old

.....without thinking really as he seems miserable and full of cold. Then read the bottle and it is from 2 months. I am guessing it will do him no harm as he is a good size (11 lbs)... he did fall asleep within 20 minutes when he has been sleeping most of day.

My older kids seemed to sleep all the time when they were poorly too though.

He probably had a bit less than 2.5ml say 2.0 ml. Looking for re-assurance really.........

I'm sure you've done no real harm as long as it's his only dose.

Elibean · 30/11/2008 18:22

I'm no medic, but am sure he'll be fine - dd was given tons of Calpol and 4 weeks when she was in hospital with bronchiolitis (and stronger stuff too, because she had to be sedated for CPAP oxygen) and no ill effects

BibiThree · 30/11/2008 18:23

And it's done now, you've probably given yourself a good beating about it and won't do it again.

Elibean · 30/11/2008 18:23

'at' not 'and'

She 2.5 mls several times, and weighed a lot less than 11 lbs IIRC. Wouldn't make a habit of it, but do'nt panic!

thenewme · 30/11/2008 18:24

I can't reassure you as I have no idea whether it will be fine or not but I would suggest you phone NHS Direct. Either they will say it will be okay or they will say what you need to do.

Bibi - you can't be sure unless you are a doctor.

Calpol from 2 months is only meant to be on a GPs say so iirc.

BreevandercampLGJ · 30/11/2008 18:24

He will be fine.

DS's best friend, had an episode when he was about 12 months. He was feeling really poorly over the course of the day his parents had maxed him out on Calpol and Nurofen.

The eventually had to take him to A&E, the on call Doctor, called for X mgs of Calpol.

My friend replied, he is maxed out on Calpol and Nurofen. The Doctor turned to her and said, believe me, he isn't.

When it had all calmed down, he told her that the instructions on the bottles are one size fits all and there is a huge margin for further doses.

Hope this helps.

The New Me

Parents relied on other parents, before they "relied" on the nanny state that is NHS Direct.

thenewme · 30/11/2008 18:29

That is fine to a point but not when a baby might have been given something that isn't great for them.

She asked for reassurance, I can't give it as I am not a doctor, so I made a suggestion as to what I thought she should do.

Babies of 4 weeks should not be given calpol imho unless told to by a doctor.

2pt4kids · 30/11/2008 18:30

My DS had calpol from birth (n Drs orders) and it was just under the 2.5mls dose for him at 6lb odd so an 11lb'er will be fine on that - its all based on weight.

LedodgyChristmasjumper · 30/11/2008 18:30

He'll be fine the doctors gave my dd calpol when she was a few hours old as she'd bashed her head on the way out!

cali · 30/11/2008 18:35

He will be absolutely fine, we give newborn babies paracetamol in the neonatal unit where I work. We work the dose out on what the baby weighs and give 10mgs/kg up to 4 times per day.
A small one off dose will not do any harm.

jofeb04 · 30/11/2008 18:53

My ds had calpol when he was a newborn in the neonatal unit, and similar to Bree, when ds was maxed out, dr at hospital said no he wasn't!

Elibean · 30/11/2008 19:01

TNM, no one is suggesting the OP or anyone else should carry on giving Calpol to under 2 month old babies indefinitely - just reassuring her that a one off dose of under 2.5 will not harm him.

I'm all in favour of calling NHS direct when necessary, but honestly wouldn't over this.

Flum · 30/11/2008 20:22

Not going to call NHS Direct, but I do see your point on that. If you all said he would be fine and he wasn't would I sue you?????

Thank you all for the re-assurance though. I knew in my hear of heart it was no major deal but you know how you turn things over and then start watching their every move!

Thank youf or all the responses. Sorry for delay got caught up with bedtime after I posted.

Reading this thread with great interest as I have a huge 5 week old - 12 lbs 10oz - who appears to be in pain and we're considering giving him a small dose of Calpol. My friend's son was six months old at that weight so the age guides are a bit meaningless really!

becstarlitsea · 03/02/2009 21:28

Does anyone else get any joy out of NHS Direct incidentally? I've called them three times in DS's short life and each time they told me to go to A&E once they'd got to the bottom of the 'flow diagram' on their computer screen.... So, in order not to clog up A&E unnecessarily I then called my Dad, who is a GP and asked 'Do I really need to go to A&E for this?' and he's said 'No, rubbish, he'll be fine, they'll be really pissed off if you turn up in A&E with that'. The funniest one was a rash on DS - I called NHS direct and they started by asking me if there was any chance he'd been bitten by a snake or a spider... Erm. No. (It was eczema as it turned out, but with a slightly unusual appearance. Yes, NHS Direct told me to go to A&E. I didn't.)

I've been told by doctors that Calpol is carefully formulated to avoid accidental overdoses being fatal.

lmao I'm so sorry but this made me chuckle 😂😂😂 xx

Lilliput · 22/03/2016 19:14

I second what Cali said, I have worked in Nnu too.

BertPuttocks · 22/03/2016 19:35

The OP's baby is 7yrs old now.

If there were any side effects I would've thought they would have shown up by now...

Lilliput · 22/03/2016 20:18

Wow! Resurrected by calpol!!
