failed root canal - been 'redone' but still hurts

Anyone know how long a tooth can be tender for after root canal treatment. This is the second treatment on the tooth, following five years of discomfort. Bit of a long story, and a lot of NHS related delays, but eventually got the tooth reopened last Tuesday and it was infected (and probably had been for 5 years ). Got it all cleaned out and dressed, ready to be filled properly next week, but it still feels very tender - in fact, similar to how it felt these last five years. Anyone know if this is normal. I'm worried there is another, undiagnosed, problem.
Anyone experienced anything similar?

I had this and was told it can be tender for months. Sadly I later needed it removing and a £2000 implant put in after spending sodding hundreds on root canal treatment.

IMO ..and have had quite a few root canals done in my time...it is very normal to still feel tender after a "cleaning"....it was explained to me by my lovely dentist that he is pushing and pulling whilst cleaning and this bruises the area so to speak..and thus does take time to recover...was even worse after final cleaning and completion for at least a few weeks..try not to eat on that side for a while...hope that helps

Thanks, herc and cos, that's good to know (although not that I might end up getting the tooth out herc!!!). Definitely can't afford an implant right now.
Anyway, I feel more reassured that it's just normal tenderness.

Iheart... I was told when I had my tooth done last year that root canal treatment is not a permanent solution, and that it's only expected to last 5-10 years. Might just be me (was a front tooth with v. narrow roots) but worth bearing in mind.

I've had 2 done, and they both still ached for a couple of years on and off.

However, they are both fine now, but I was always surprised that something hurt which had no nerve supply!

I had mine done more than 10 years ago, and it's fine.

It was done once, and continued to hurt. Another dentist x-rayed it and showed me how it was 'cleaned' with a medium length needle, which left the roots intact and infected

After it was done the second time, I had no more problems. It certainly didn't continue to hurt like before. Maybe a bit sore for a while, but nowhere near the extreme pain that got me climbing the walls before the root canal.

That's wierd I have had 4 and they never hurt once they were done. I have in moments of madness thought having them all done would save me many days of toothache most years.
