Anyones child ahd grommets and they've not worked or had to get done again?

Friend's ds has had 5 years + of ear trouble (he's almost 7) with infections and perforations and had his 3rd set of grommets put in December. He's not had a problem since but has to be careful about swimming. Friend is hoping they stay in until winter is over but her ds is fed up with them. He has also had adenoids and tonsils out but that made very little difference.

I think its quite common for the grommets to fall out sooner than they should. ds1 and ds2oth had grommets and with ds2 one came out after about 3 months

Ds has just has grommets put in and the consultant said that about 20% of cases do need them put back. Also he said they usually stay in for 6-12 months so it sounds like your dd's have come out quite early so perhaps not enough time to work.

We also reduced dairy and found this worked well. DS has rice milk (didn't like soya) but now has 'normal' yogs and cheese unless he is ill when I cut most dairy from his diet. I have found this stops a runny nose developing into a full-on head cold with ear infections requiring antibiotics. In fact he has not needed antibiotics since switching from cow's milk.

but we didn't want ds to have a gen aenes for something that had a lot of luck involved

we have tried otovent and cranial osteopathy and have had some success with both. he hasn't had an ear infec since october. having said that he is currently complaining of ear ache

We cut out dairy 3 years ago when my ds had back to back ear infections - only time he was clear was when he was on antibiotics, which he became resistant to. Liquid (alcohol free) Echinecea cleared the fluid in his ears and keeping him off dairy (now has Calcium fortified Soya) means he has not had one (or a chest infection) since. If he does get a cold - which is very rare now, it does not become 'productive' and cause him any probs apart from a bit of a runny nose. They do lots of dairy free products now - the flavoured Soya milk tastes really nice and they even do Childrens (not bits in it!) Soy Yoghurts. You must try it before she gets long term ear problems - the ear drum will not heal if if repeatedly bursts

Sorry Ainsmum, never replied, yes ds1's grommets worked a treat. He went round saying "loud!" with an expression of wonder every time I talked to him for the first few days, also started speaking in whole sentences, not just individual words.

BTW I found changing to goats mild really helped

DS (5) has had three sets of grommets. First two sets stayed in place for a year each, third set (incidentaly, done by a registrar rather than a consultant) came out after only a few months. We are desperately trying to reschedule a fourth op - I think it's worth it, but then my DS is also profoundly deaf, so any little bit helps. He has a pair of waterproof hearing aids which he used for swimming, otherwise swimming is a hassle. However, I have read some research saying there wasn't much difference between two groups of children who avoided water in the ears and the other didn't get the same advice. Good luck.
