I am in pain. My back hurts. What is the best course of action?

Hi,

I have twisted my back. It hurts. I have taken Ibuprofen.

It is agony to sit. It hurts to stand and it is uncomfortable to lay and laying in the same position makes my tummy hurt.

What is best for me (must be compatible with looking after 3 children)

ice pack, followed by a warm hot water bottle, change every 10 mins. Sounds odd, but an osteopath recommended it to me and it really worked. That and just resting in the least uncomfortable position. Get an appointment with an osteopath asap. I put my back out 3 days before my wedding and the one I saw got me to walk down the aisle and even spend all day on my feet!

Are you pregnant? There are also anti-inflammatories that your doc can prescribe that are stronger than ibuprofen. Obviously not an idea if you're preggers.

Hope this helps xx

I have a upboard full of diclofenac and strong co-codamol that GP prescibed for DP that he didn't use....not sure if I dare take them though (although I have had the voltarol before - so know that I am not allergic etc.). I might take them at bedtime to help me get comfortable.

Both of those were prescribed to me after DS was born, tho I'd be wary of taking any drugs that were not prescribed to me personally. Have you had co-codamol before? You can have nasty reactions to it.

DoNotAsfinishedXmasshopping · 29/11/2008 17:12

yes. but not this strength

Can you get to a chemist and buy some co-codamol over the counter? It's stronger pain relief, but at a dose safe for you. If the prescription was for your husband, it's likely to be too much for you.

BecauseImWorthIt · 29/11/2008 17:16

Syndol might be helpful - it has a muscle relaxant in it as well. You can buy it over the counter.

dear oh dear DNA, you do get yourself into some scrapes don't you.

Right

  1. hair out of face

  2. warm socks

  3. paracetamol

  4. Ibuprofen

  5. ice/heat as chocolate recommends or just hot pack

  6. keep moving

  7. Ignore DC

  1. hair out of face check

  2. warm socks check and nice new super warm slippers!!

  3. paracetamol DP seems to have stolen it all (and buggered off to football leaving me in agony with 3 DCS

  4. Ibuprofen check

  5. ice/heat as chocolate recommends or just hot pack...far too cold for ice

  6. keep moving - am trying

  7. Ignore DC - if I do that I will have a sleeping DD3 which means that I will have a hyperactive DD3 at 11pm tonight...which will be bad (she has skipped her afternoon nap as I couldn't cathc and keep hold of her!)

re point 7)

tv & froot shoots & poke with stick.

DoNotAsfinishedXmasshopping · 29/11/2008 17:22

I don't have froot shoots in and the TV is inducing sleep...I am trying to sing carols with Santa on You Tube.

I am waiting for DP to get home to cook tea and get sugar into her bloodstream

Is it cold where you are? It's blardy freezing here. Why not put her outside for 5 mins in her vest & pants, that should liven her up.

Sympathies though. Back pain is horrid. Back pain plus DC, deeply horrid.

Yes it is cold.

Now whilst I do normally trust your advice 100% I fear that if I put her outside she will a) run away and b) I will be reported for abuse by my SS neightbour .

DP has just arrived home....so I am about to offload them and the cooking (unless he runs straight to bath of course!)

Well you need to think outside the box lady. Tie her to the back door so she can't run of.

Anyways if your DP is back you need to get your arse off that chair and have a bit of a walk about. Every 20mins. Get a timer. You will have nil points sympathy if you sit here all night mning and then wonder why you can't get out of the chair.

SlubberOverTheYardArm · 29/11/2008 17:44

OFF ffs

DoNotAsfinishedXmasshopping · 29/11/2008 17:46

I won't be sitting here all night MN...tis saturday I shall be laying on teh Setee watching Casulaty and Outnumbered!!!

Seriously though...I am alternating between MN and nursery rhymmes/Christmas carols on You tube>
