Copper Coil paranoia... need some reasurance!

Ive just had the coil fitted just over a week ago and what an experience that was! I went into cervical shock and found the whole thing quite painful, despite having had a vaginal delivery. Ive had a loop excision on my cervix which would possibly make it more "temperamental".

Anyway I digress - I chose the copper coil as I have done the pill for years and then after my DD tried Depo jab but it completly killed my libido - and turned me into a suicidal axe murderer!!! So now hormones are out and having been off them for a year I feel like "me" again.

But now Ive read all the posts where everyone seems to get P with the coil in... Ive never met anyone in RL who has ! Hence Im holding DP at arms length and very worried even though my GP said it was one of the most effective forms - like the pill.

Am I being silly...?

I got a copper coil implant March 15. Holy crap it is the most internal pain i have ever experienced. I went without taking the prescribed painkillers as i had forgotten to take them and hadn't had anything to eat. The insertion was extremely painful and once it was done it was fine. I am a Personal Trainer and i was meeting a client to train...i thought i was ok, except once i jumped into my car, started driving the 9 miles to the gym and felt the worst period type pain ever!!! Got to the gym shoved something in my mouth so i could take pain killers. The pain was so bad my poor client watched me as i nearly passed out and had to vomit into one of the bins on the gym floor!!!

Went home cleared my diary and lay in agony for the next 12 hours!!! I still have a few aches and pains, the discharge...as gross as it sounds...there is so much!!!! I have heard this is normal, but i have lost a few pounds that i couldn't shift on the pill and as a Personal Trainer....its important to look like a PT!!! Other then that though i prefer the coil, its a small price to pay for the convenience of not taking the pill and not having the extra weight!!!

How ever the BF of nearly 4 years says to me the other day....."I think we should start trying for a baby".....ARE YOU FRICKEN KIDDING ME!!! lol

Hi All,

After researching the net for weeks and reading all the feedback you have left i have decided to give my own story. I read that the copper Nova T 380 was really good and i went for that.

The fitting was very painful considering i can take pain. But let me say it all depends on the doctor fitting it and how relaxed you are. Make sure you take 2 paracetamol before hand. The pain feels like a period spasm and pulls in your tummy as the doctor had to catch the cervix in order to insert the coil so that was a little uncomfortable and a bit painful but the whole thing lasted 5 mins so not that bad and would do it again if i had to.

As for the after effects: i bled straight after and heavily. I continued to bleed for 3 days and then 2 days of spotting. It is day 7 now and there is no blood or spotting at all. Grin Also from the beginning i had a bloated tummy and stomach aches (such as period pains) and they are still there but getting better each day so am looking forward to them going away.

The string does not bother my partner although he can feel it and if you want it can be made shorter at a later stage.

My experience has been good so far with the Nova T and i have read so many negative stories about the Mirena as in it takes at least 6 months to settle and again you are taking hormones so definitely opt in for copper i think.

For those feeling pain or bleed for months i would say get tested for STIs or STDs as if you have an infection it can make you bleed after the coil is inserted and need to be treated for those so that can be a cause.

Hope that helped.

HI,

I had a copper coil fitted yesterday at the Margare Pyke cnetre in London. I am 26 and not kids. I was on Yasmin for a year and it led to me having a blood clot and pulminary embolism and i now dont want to take any hormones that are not essential so the copper coil was the best choice for me.

I was advised to have a good breakfast and take a few paracetamel before going as my appointment wasa t 9am. The clinic were great and i told the doctor fitting it that i was nervous about the pain so she suggested that i have a local anesthetic incection to numb the area. I had 3 little injections which felt very strange and a bit sore, a sharp pinch sort of pain.

After that i really felt nothing. When i was measured and then the coil fitted it was not sore. It was an odd feeling but no pain.

I got up pretty quickly and hopped on teh tube home. I have had a bit of crampint and light bleeding ever since but nothing that a fe painkillers havnt been able to solve.

Am off on holiday tomorrow with the boyfriend so hopefully the bleeding stops. Will update in a few weeks
with how i am getting on with it.

Hi All,

I got a copper coil fitted last night (the TT380 Slimline)- my goodness the pain was awful! I have tried all other contraceptives, but had problems with all hormonal options (weight gain etc) so the doctor advised the coil. The doctor said it would be have around the same effectiveness as the pill, Yasmin, that I was taking, however on researching the Copper Coil it seems to have quite a high failure rate, can anyone out my rest (or otherwise) I need a reliable from of contraception...(I am 31 with no kids)

Thanks x

Hi all
I had the copper coil fitted in feb and found the last 18 weeks terrible, when i had it first put in i thought i was going to die i have never felt pain like it, after a few weeks everything seemed ok but after the 8th week i was having to take spear clothes in to work as i was bleeding so heavy , im moody, very tearful and always tired i also got tummy pains that slowly started getting worse now i seem to live on anibiotics as i keep getting infections and the smell makes me and my partner want be to sick and our sex life has gone out the window.
as the pains started getting worse over the last couple of weeks it felt like iv been sitting on a knife so in the end i booked to have it removed but the nurse could not find my threads after a scan which showed it in the right place, the pain got worse and it felt like someone was repeatly stabbing me with a knife i went straight to hospital but was told they couldnt do anything just to take painkillers then sent me home, the nurse is waiting for my results back from my scan i can not wait to have it removed.
p.s is anyone else finding that they are a lot more 'damp' since having it?

I had the UT 380 copper coil fitted 2 1/2 weeks ago and I'm not sure what is wrong with me but I feel like i'm going through a second puberty! I spotted until a few days ago, when I seem to have started a period (about 10 days early). My skin has become terrible, my mood swings are absolutely horrendous and i've been feeling very low. I haven't been on the pill (or had any other hormones) for 3 years, so this has kind of hit me like a brick; I actually feel like i've been going crazy. Has anyone else experienced this? Am I just having mega-PMT?! :-(

Pip1975 · 10/11/2011 22:40

God I wish I had read some of these before I had the Mirena (?) coil fitted today. Had Cervical Shock (again ?) passed out needed oxygen. Supposedly something to do with nerves supplying cervix also supply heart so rate fell.

Hope it is all worth it, feel pretty crap at mo :(

lorilobs · 07/01/2012 13:36

hi there, i had my copper coil fitted in november, following several months on cerazette(mini pill), i am a liability taking any pill regularly, ended up taking morning after pill twice in same number of months(pretty embarrassing for a 30 year old nurse). i have one baby and wish not for another yet.
decided to go for copper as i have zero libido and i put on weight when taking any other contraception(tried depo and got very fat, used implant with fair success until i needed to remove it to get pregnant, and then used mini pill)decided to go hormone free, but aware of the risk my fairly painful periods may get worse and heavier.

i found insertion very uncomfortable, but not as bad as some describe. i bled for 10 days after that, very painful and heavy, as expected.
went to my gp who prescribed me ponstan(mefanemic acid i think)which is an anti inflammatory, it appears to help reduce the bleeding also, its to be taken several times a day from day 1 of the period until day 4, when i stop it and resume taking anti inflammatories(diclofenac is my drug of choice)he also gave me strong co-codamol(30/500) which make me stoned, so i take them at night or half the dose for daytime. this made it much more bearable. and the bleeding tailed off to pinky discharge after 4 days.
i have found a few times that iv got a spot of blood when i wipe after peeing, and iv noticed a large volume of clear/cloudy discharge, this is pretty much all the time. im not quite used to that. another thing iv noticed is iv been getting mild thrush symptoms for 10 days before my period, had that for a few months before the coil was fitted. have read that this can happen to some women and i may need to get a proper treatment for the thrush.

on the whole, i would say that i look forward to the period pain to reduce and the bleeding too, but i can manage it while i use the drugs my gp prescribed.
im delighted to report a massive reduction in my appetite, so i assume the scales will reflect this soon:D. hopefully this coil will be used for the whole 5 years of its lifetime!

For what it's worth, I had my first copper coil in 1989 when DD2 was about 6 months old. Although I was EBF on demand, my periods came back after 4 weeks and the doc said that I didn't want the bother of periods while I was BF, so he put me on the mini pill and I bled all the time pretty much. Then we had a condom failure and I had the coil and apart from a short break when I had a partner who had had the snip, I have had one ever since.

I've never had any problem with periods, or strings, or infections and for me it has been ideal and I've not even found insertion or removal to be a problem.

All I would say is, like all methods of contraception, if it suits you, it's great, if it doesn't, it's a nightmare. The only way to find out, is to give it a go.

Hi, I had Marina coil fitted after DD1 was 6 weeks old and I had no periods, no pain and insertion was painless. Even though Marina has lovest hormone level of all - I hads really bad mood swings and depression....but that is not all. After 3,5 years on it I start feeling really weird, went to doctor and after lots of tests, scans etc. we found out that I was pregnant! The coil was perfectly in place! Well....I suppose I am the unlucky 1%!

So, DD2 is 3 month old now and I had copper coil fitted couple days ago. Installation was not bad but since then I was bleeding (I am fully breast feeding) and feeling really tired, stomach aches, dizziness, headache - bad, bad, bad! And I was hoping that if no hormones involved it going to be easy!

Really hope that its not relayed or will settle soon......

Smiley1968 · 31/07/2012 17:10

Had my copper coil fitted approx 2 weeks ago. No pain while being inserted but spotting straight away for approx 5 days. Couple of days free of blood, but now (I think) may have got my period a few days early - difficult to tell - constant back pain with increased blood loss when active, feeling bloated! At least reading some of the messages on here I realise that it's not unusual. 100% effect contraception though - obv not pleasant to let partner anywhere near me!

notcitrus · 31/07/2012 17:22

Had a modern copper coil inserted nearly a month ago (Nova T380).
Didn't hurt at all, even having a smear at the same time, which was a very pleasant surprise!
Little bit of bleeding a few days later. No other effects. No pain. I'm hoping that as I only have a period about once a year thanks to PCOS, those should be OK.

I had really bad postnatal depression beforehand, triggered I think by the Cerazette pill, and that's now gone completely, so I'm really happy. I can't feel the threads myself but MrNC can.
