dd4 cord fell off on day 4. (she is 8days old now) her belly button is rather odd. a lot of it is tucked under a flap of skin. it looks bruised on the skin around near the bottom of it, and is slightly red atm. have been cleaning with cooled boiled water. its bleeding slightly and a bit oozy.

should i get it looked at over the weekend or wait till HV comes out on monday?

Oh huge congratulations, surely that was the fastest pg ever? Doesn't seem like last week you announced it.

Ds2's belly button did the same. It was pretty gross and we took him to the docs who sent us to the paed assessment unit. They checked it and swabbed it and I don;t think we had to do anything else except keep it clean. Definitely no anti-b's or the like anyway. Possibly they cleaned it with special stuff, all I can really remember was that he just wanted to bf the whole time we were there which made examining his belly button a bit tricky !

The swabs came back showing MRSA which isn;t as dramatic as it sounds apparently. It just means he was carrying it on his skin (quite a large % of us do according to the doc) but we needed to be aware if he needed any ops or anything like that.

I think at that age I'd err on the side of caution and phone the OOH docs in the morning.

thank you both. will keep an eye on it over the weekend and see if if it can be left till monday.

my dd2 was the same but they had to remove the clamp bit on day 2, because she pooed on it, and i was worried it would get infected, but they told me not to worry and sure enough by about day 10 it looked normal. can you see the base of it? is it red inflammed? cause dd1 had that and i had to clean it with sterile swabs, but she had to cry as her base was so far in!! ds had a hernia with his so that was okay

trust your own instinct and is you worried phone the midwife or hv or even your gp, i was told they would rather see 1000 healthy babies than miss the 1 poorly one iyswim

p.s i love the name and the pics are gorgeous

the cord has fallen off.

i got my mum to look at it today, she agrees that they might be a problem, but is not 100% herself either. its not bothering dd4, and its not bleeding at all today (was a little bit bloody yesterday), so am just going to carry on cleaning and drying it till monday.

You could always phone NHS direct.
Congrats, BTW!!

SoupDragon · 22/11/2008 14:12

BabyDragon's took a while to stop bleeding. I was told to stop messing about with it (I was gently cleaning it but this was enough to stop it scabbing nicely and healing over)

hi congrats xxxx
dd was a bit like this - it was almost in a little pocket of skin. doc said it was granulation and put a bit of silver nitrate which did the job

Midwife told me to squirt breastmilk on it... This was her solution to any newborn ailment I think. Don't know if this helps?
