Spotty face and using canesten. Has anyone else done this ??

Hi. I have had spots roud my mouth for 8 weeks. I (perhaps supidly) self diagnosed it as 'peri oral dermatitis' and seeing on the web that a natural way to treat this was to try applying and drinking apple cider vinegar, I tried this for a few weeks. (The usual treatment for this condition is a 6 week course of anti bio's - which I did not fancy).

The vinegar didn't work so I tried live yoghurt (eating it and wearing it as a face mask). This improved it but did not get rid of it. Feeling desparate I went to the Dr who gave me penicillin 4 times a day for a week. No improvement. So because the live yoghurt had seemed to help, Dr suggested it might be a fungal infection, so to try canesten.

I have been whacking that on 3 times a day as well as still eating and using the live yoghurt as a face mask. It is definitely drying up, after a weeks use. Thing is, I have never heard of canesten being used on the face before. I wondered if anyone else had done this and if so - did you keep using it for a while after the spots had gone to make sure the infection was definitely gone ?

I'm being quite 'generous' with the cream when I apply it and am not sure whether I might be doing my skin some damage ?? Am just desperate to get rid of it. It has really knocked my confidence....

Perioral dermatitis and seborrhoeic dermatitis on the face often have a fungal element to them and respond well to antifungal treatments.

I often presecribe canesten or daktarin/daktacort for either and usually see good results.

There is no steroid in straightforward canesten, so you won't do any damage to your skin. If you use canesten Hc or daktacort, they both have a weak steroid in them, so use should be as little as possible for as short as possible to avoid longer-term skin damage.

Many thanks for the info Emma - am very grateful. I've read a lot on the web about peri oral dermatitis but noone has ever mentioned canesten. If I'd known it could help I would have tried it weeks ago. Thanks again.

Well I was 'spot free' for over 2 weeks, so have only been applying Canesten once a day and had stopped eating live yoghurt and applying it on the affected area.

Yesterday the spots started coming back !!!! I just don't know what to do !!! My face is mildly itchy and does respond to the Canesten but it obviously isn't enough.

Does anyone know of anything else that could treat what appears to be a fungal infection ?

I will go back to the Dr's but they haven't been much use so far !!!!!!!

Just as the of old spots start to fade I get a load more. I'm gutted !!!!!

Did you ever get rid of your Perioral Dermatitis? If so what did you do? I think I have it and don't want to take anti-iotics.

Wow, surprised to find this thread - I just did a search on perioral dermatitis as I have also self diagnosed via google but was not expecting to find anything! Pharmacist and a friend of mine who is a GP both suggested hydrocortisone cream which I now discover is a major trigger for it! I feel very depressed, I have always been told I have lovely skin, never had spots etc and now I have this permanant crop of pimples on my face. Have also tried yogurt, canesten, and aloe vera and tea tree, and switched to non flouride toothpaste. I am reluctant to go to GP as I think they will just suggest HC cream again. Would love to hear from anyone who has solved this!!

any updates on this? did anyone find a cure?

KurriKurri · 11/02/2012 12:59

Hi all - I have sebborrhoic dermatitis on my face, and was prescribed Daktarin by the GP. - It made my skin very inflamed although it did help the spots a bit. So - I asked for tips on here and several people mentioned Nizoral shampoo. Its got the same anti fungal ingredient as the cream I was prescribed, but I seem to be able to tolerate it on my skin with no inflammation probs.

I use a little drop lathered in my hands and used as a face wash on the affected areas. It definitely helps, - it's not a cure, - if I stop using for any length of time, the spots come back, but things are definitely better and if I d get a flare up, a couple of days of using it will calm things down.

I've only been using it for a couple of months, so can't give any opinions on any long term effects - but so far so good.

HTH

Oh meant to say - you get nizoral with the anti dandruff shampoos in the chemist, - its about £5-£6 for a small bottle IIRC, but as a face wash, a little goes a long way.

turbulenteddy · 22/02/2012 22:55

thanks KurriKurri, two weeks application of daktacort made no difference, so I've now been prescribed Metronidazole in case it's rosacea. If that fails it looks like gp might refer me to a dermatologist. Seems odd that they can't diagnose with any certainty, but there we go

I think dermatitis is caused by fungus because I had the perioral type with the spotty face and red rash around my mouth and it only went away once I used a natural cream by mama nature (pro-skin eczema) that is ant-fungal and anti-bacterial. If I'd known about the canesten I could have saved myself some money. Hey ho! That's life.
