Any tips on having wisdom teeth out?

Half way through having my wisdom teeth out - two down, two to go. First one was really easy; second one painful, swollen and achey afterwards. I have been taking arnica (when I remember). Any other tips? Whwn would I expect to have healed up? (Ready for the next stage in the Great Gum Disease Clean Up)

Class-A drugs

Sympathies, it's shit. I had all 4 out under GA. Good luck with the next 2

BoccaDellaVerita · 17/11/2008 23:41

My only other tip is to be extra vigilant about teeth cleaning afterwards. I had all 4 out under GA and then caught got a hideous and painful infection when a tiny particle of food got into the wound. Can't remember how long it took for everything to heal but obviously that delayed it.

Good luck!

I had 2 out at once, on the same side, my advice is dont drive to your app. the anasthetic made me have double vision for about 2 hours after.

Plenty of strong pain killers and regular salty mouth washes

VinegarTits · 17/11/2008 23:44

Sorry, meant to say, i had a local anesthtic, so was awake, hence the double vision after

racingsnake · 18/11/2008 08:51

Mmmm. Doesn't sound very hopeful. I think I was hoping for someone to say 'I took this little homeopathetic thingy and didn't notice a thing'. May need to move to another strand and discuss why God has seen fit to give us teeth and not nice low-maintenance, long-lasting beaks.

Well, I've never been convinced of the benefits of homeopathic thingies, but I do believe fervently in the curative powers of luxury ice cream. Perhaps you could buy an ice cream maker and stock up on double cream?

Not sure re pain relief but Corsodyl mouthwash was recommended to me for keeping the mouth clear of infection after having the teeth out.

SCL · 18/11/2008 09:40

Also mouth felt loads better within 10 days - had 4 out at the same time.

MamaChris · 18/11/2008 09:42

strong strong painkillers, scarf wrapped round face if you go out (hide the swelling, keep the cold wind away which exacerbates pain).

can you do the remaining two on the same day? I had all four out at once, it was awful, but only for a few days. I can't imagine doing it four separate times!

DaisyMooSteiner · 18/11/2008 09:48

I had mine out under GA too - I've had smaller teeth taken out under local and a GA was SO much nicer. I didn't have any swelling to speak of either and was back to normal very very quickly.

Good luck.

racingsnake · 18/11/2008 18:10

Thank you for messages of support. I like the sound of luxury icecream (possibly mixed with Corsodyl mouthwash).

Mmmmm .... corsodyl ice cream .... wonder if you could sell the idea to Ben and Jerry's?

No advice - only my sympathy... tis miserable.

BoccaDellaVerita · 18/11/2008 18:24

Yes, but 'tis also short-lived (unlike, in my case, the recurring gum infections around impacted wisdom teeth).

Such a great post I wanted to make sure you didn't miss it.

My surgeon left the stitches in on one side as I fainted with the pain of him pulling the others out - I had bruising down to my navel and the hamster look took months to go

Stitches rotted away - with horrible taste and me pulling out random manky bits for at least 6 months afterwards

I remember where i was when the last stubborn tag of stitch finally came out with persistent tugging just like it was yesterday!

For me - it wasn't fast relief to a chronic problem but I'm sure for you it will be a far more pleasant experience!

So, I'm guessing if I do have a tip or two they would be...

have it done under local, not general anaesthetic (dental surgeon can't kneel on your chest that way )

and

don't faint when you're having the stitches out

racingsnake · 18/11/2008 21:19

Hmm. Looking forward to tooth number 3 more and more!

DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT...

...Eat 'small' food for a while - i.e. rice, small peas, finely chopped veg etc

The now gaping holes in your jaw have an awesome capacity for attracting bits. Grimmer than grim and requires mucho swilling of salt water

Felt much better after about 2 weeks though.

ClaireDeLoon · 28/11/2008 00:42

I had a similar experience to wabbit - bruising went down my neck and chest in column, face like a beachball with colours to match - for ages. Then my jaw muscles went into shock and I needed to do physio exercises to work on opening my mouth. Awful. That was under GA.

Anyway, I'm sure the rest of the extractions will be just fine. Have lots of ice cream I agree.

gigglewitch · 28/11/2008 00:44

eat Arnica 6c tablets every two hours for two days.

livinginadreamworld · 28/11/2008 13:29

i feel the need to say it is not always bad!!

I have had all 4 of mine out with LA. First two then one then one.

My dentist was great, they popped out, even though two were considered a 'tricky' extraction.

I had an infection with one.... my fault for smoking!....dont do it!

I took CoCodomol..... over the counter from boots, and ibroprofen when necessary, never for more than two days as that was all i needed. I am generally a very slow healer, cuts take weeks to heal and i bruise easily and bleed forever.... yet had little problem with my wisdom teeth. Strange but true!

Basically, prepare for the worse, but it does not always go badly, and if you have a good dentist like mine, it can be an okay experience... as far as extractions go!!

Bit of a rambling post...sorry!!
