Not life-threatening, just uncomfy - any tips to ease Geographic Tongue?

I've just been diagnosed with the rather splendidly titled condition of Geographic Tongue. Basically your tongue becomes sore and ulcerated in odd patterns that resemble a map, hence the name.

But it makes eating quite challenging at times. Spicy or citric foods really aggravate it. However there's no medicine you can take.

I'm taking vit B, and have switched toothpaste, to one that doesn't have the foaming agent SLS as that's meant to make it worse. It's eased a bit but my tongue still feels burnt.

Anyone out there had it and found anything that helps? And does it go away for good, or keep coming back? Thx in advance.

I really don't know, but will bump for you.

Also, does it ease if you eat soft, smooth, cold foods such as yoghurt or icecream?

I have geographic tongue, but I think I must have just a mild case as I did not notice it until my dentist told me I had it.

Hi there.
Me too.
It is only recently that it has started and I find that it gets worse after too much fatty/sweet/rubbish food.
Tis quite sore today.

hi poppinda, I have had geographic tongue for years. I find pineapple, bananas and red wine are the worse things for me. I tend to drink lots of water when I have a flare up.
I'd never heard of it before my dentist told me what it was, I just thought I had a sore tongue!

I'm pretty sure my ds2 has this. I did ask a doctor once, but he wouldn't let her look in his mouth!

I didn't realise that it could be uncomfortable, maybe that is why he is sometimes a bit off his food.

popsycal · 18/11/2008 19:43

i have it111

NOTHING HELPS OTHER THAN AVOIDING TRIGGER FOODA

MINE IS WORSE WHEN TIRED/STRESSED
ALSO I CAN EAT 'BAD' FOODS WHEN COVERED EG TOMATO IN A SANDWICH ETC

opps caps

feeding ds3 now but will think and return

popsycal · 18/11/2008 19:45

just to add..
got it mildly after having ds1 then badly after ds2 and it returms regularly at varying strengths

have it now due to buying the wrong hummus (tesco is fine but asda not)

Wallace · 18/11/2008 20:27

Thanks. I will be keeping an eye out now to see if there is a pattern to the things ds2 rejects.

MumtoCharlieandLola · 18/11/2008 20:31

How strange, I had this too when I was pregnant with DS1 and not so badly when I had DS2. I thought it was just me, I didn't realise it was a pregnancy thing popsycal.

You're not preggers are you poppinda ?

Pineapple was defo the worst thing for me. It did go away eventually though.

Two good tips from my dentist; use a mild salt solution as a mouthwash, as often as you feel like, but definitely after every time you clean your teeth and brush the affected areas very gently with a soft toothbrush. These do make it feel a bit better.

popsycal · 18/11/2008 21:14

pineapple is horrific ofor me
bananas, tomatoes, kiwis, etc are the next worst

Goober · 18/11/2008 22:23

Does stress bring it on in most people as it does with me?

MrsBadger · 18/11/2008 22:43
