high temp but no other symptoms - what could it be?

my dd aged 2.2 has had a high temp on and off since yesterday but no other real symptoms. she has a bit of a cough but thats normal. she is full of beans, has been out and about today, slept for about an hour at lunchtime (normal) and has eaten about normal amounts.i wouldnt have guessed she even had a temp had she not been sent home from nursery.
can anyone suggest what it might be or what i should do? I have given her a cool bath and nurofen and she is now in bed but not sure if there is anything else i should do.

urine infection?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 15/11/2008 19:48

Yes, I would suspect urine infection before anything else..although my DD had a similar bug recently where she just kept spiking a high temp for a couple of days with no other symptoms.

Does her urine smell stronger than usual or does she seem to have pain when she passes water?

GinghamRibbon · 15/11/2008 19:49

Give paracetamol, it's better than nurofen at getting the temp down. If you combine the two at each 2 hour interval it should work, but if I did this and they still have temp after 3 hours, I would call the doctor to be honest.

Do you know that she has a temp or are you relying on your hand. I do this and then if worried use a strip?

she doesnt seem to have pain but some wees have been a little darker than normal. if it is a UTI, can i treat it at home or will she need abs? they have sent a few children home from nursery this week with temps but most have apparently lasted a day or so and got better, or had a d and v bug.

I think at that age she should see the GP if its a UTI and will probably need antibiotics...

olivo · 15/11/2008 19:53

sorry gingham, x posts! i have used a digital ear thermometer. i originally gave paracetamol but read on here that nurofen was better for lowering temps!
It just seems to be so on and off, and she doesn't seem ill as such.

Uti will probably need antibiotics.
Get her to drink plenty.

ok, next question, should i do it tonight/tomorrow or can it wait till monday morning? would never knowingly put her at risk but out of hours costs a lot (not in UK!)

I am sure that it will wait until Monday unless you cannot control the temp. If the temp goes down with medicine then fine. If not, it's Saturday night at a&e for you, poor thing.

nickytwotimes · 15/11/2008 19:57

Just see how she goes.
Keep monitoring her temperature. If she is getting worse, get her seen pronto.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 15/11/2008 20:05

I would also get her to drink as much water as you can (easier said than done I know!)

My dd (now 7½) gets 24/36 hour mini fevers and has done since she was quite young.

As long as they drink plenty of liquids and the temperature comes down about 20-30 mins after taking medication then she should be fine. But keep a close eye on her for any other symptoms obviously.

I would recommend Nurofen rather than Calpol (it's much more effective in lowering temperature) and also leaving cups or bottles ofwater and diluted juice around so she can help herself to drinks.

thank you so much for all your help, i really appreciated it. i decided to phone the out of hours dr for some advice and he said he wanted to see her so we took her down. he thinks she may have a uti but she also has bronchiolitis ( i thought this was her usual asthmatic wheeze!) so she has antibiotics and calpol and we have to keep an eye on her.thanks again for all your help.
